[9/6] Preview: WOBEONFEST Kickoff Party at One-2-One Bar

September 6, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

Cilantro BoomboxTonight popular South Lamar live music venue One-2-One Bar will host the Wobeon Fest kick-off party before the big festival happens on Sept. 20. The three band bill will offer fusion sounds of Latin America and Africa from bands based right here in Austin. World Music fans will want to make plans for the evening to be at this event.

Headlining tonight’s showcase is Afro-Latin fusion band Cilantro Boombox. The group formed when producer/bassist Felix Pacheco and Joe Willard of saxophonist Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears fame came together in 2010. Their music fuses elements of funk, soul, rock and Afrobeat with traditional Latin rhythms. They’ve been the opening act for Los Amigos Invisibles on multiple occasions in Texas and most recently hosted a series of killer boat parties.

The sounds of Africa will be provided by Austin-based Zoumountchi. A familiar name to world music fans locally as the house band every Saturday night at Sahara Lounge, Zoumountchi is the perfect band to be associated with any world music showcase or event. The group was founded by Ibrahim Aminou, originally from Niger (in West Africa). Zoumountchi performs originals and arrangements of traditional African songs, complimented by a horn section.

Opening the night’s showcase are Austin-based Mente Clara. According to their bio, the group came together “out of a love for the music of Hermeto Pascoal and other Brazilian masters.” In May they released their debut album Wanderlust independently. Look for Mente Clara to bring their own take on Hermeto’s “Universal Music” wherever they go.

One-2-One Bar is located at  1509 S. Lamar. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music starts at 7:30 p.m. 21+ are welcome. $8 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here. See set times below.

Cilantro Boombox – 10:30 p.m.

Zoumoutchi – 9 p.m.

Mente Clara – 7:30 p.m.
