[3/23] Preview: Chente Barrera at Texas Mist

March 21, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

Saturday night, Mar. 23, Texas Mist welcomes Chente Barrera to the stage. Hailing from Losoya, Texas, the multi-talented drummer, singer, bandleader, producer, and songwriter returns to Austin for another show full of what some consider the next generation of Tejano.

He might look young, but Barrera is a veteran, having played with some of the heavyweights of Tejano, including David Lee Garza, with whom Chente’s late father also played. An accomplished drummer and vocalist, Chente’s solo career has been remarkable, including a Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album for Sigue El Taconazo in 2007. Through his record label, Q-Vo Records, Chente has recorded and produced artists like bajo sexto master Juan P. Moreno, accordion titan David Farias, and “La Reina de Conjunto” Linda Escobar.

Long story short: A great, David Lee Garza-style Tejano sound, with plenty of covers of popular classics and new originals. Barrera manages to have a fresh sound that appeals to younger listeners and an older crowd as well.
