[8/16] Preview: Los A-T Boyz and Boni Mauricio y Los Maximos at Texas Club Bar and Grill

August 15, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

cumbia conjuntoSaturday, Aug. 16, will be quite a night at the Texas Club Bar and Grill. There will be a little something for everyone when Austin’s own Tejano powerhouse, Los A-T Boyz, shares the evening with big-time Corpus Christi Conjunto Boni Mauricio y Los Maximos at the southeast Austin Tejano hotspot.

Los A-T Boyz, formerly known as Alma Tejana, are known for their high energy live show, with la familia Rodriguez masterfully working the stage through each cumbia, ranchera, and charanga. Their sound draws from almost every genre, allowing their creative spirit and radiant energy to shine through during every performance and on every recording. The guys just released a new single, “Mundo de Promesa,” featuring Cacy Savala.

Boni Mauricio, affectionately referred to as “El Mero Chingon,” is known for his pachuco style, unique voice, and commanding stage presence. With roughly 40 years in the music business in the Coastal Bend, Boni has been around and played with many of the legends, including his padrino, the late, great Tony De La Rosa. He formed his own conjunto, Los Maximos, in the early ’90s and developed a style firmly rooted in the no-nonsense, old-school De La Rosa tradition. He and the Maximos played at this year’s Austin Conjunto Festival (organized by Johnny Degollado) and their latest album, Mis Polkas Favoritas, is available now.

Long story short: Billed as a “Cumbia – Conjunto Blowout,” this show will definitely live up to that title. Their styles couldn’t be more different: the A-T Boyz bring the Tejano flavors of saxophone, congas, cumbias, and choreography to a younger audience, while Boni brings the hardcore Conjunto polkas and more to a sharp-dressed crowd who favors tradition. Well worth the cover!

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The show starts at 9 p.m., cover is $8 before 9 p.m. $10 after 9 p.m., and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621 or view the Facebook event here.

[8/9] Preview: Cinco Doce at Texas Club Bar and Grill

August 7, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Cinco Doce Aug 9Saturday, August 9, Tejano continues at the Texas Club Bar and Grill. High energy Austin cumbia masters Cinco Doce will be taking the stage, along with special guest Devin Banda.

Cinco Doce has made its mark in recent years with a trademark sound heavily influenced by Tejano and rock, as well as other rhythmic genres like bachata, reggaeton, and hip-hop. Their great stage show, unique sound, and hip, urban-inspired image, have gained them a loyal following, particularly among younger listeners. Their newest single, “La Fiesta” is available now.

Rising star Devin Banda will also be performing. The former Tejano Idol contestant has been making waves in the Tejano industry recently, enchanting fans with her charisma and undeniable talent. Her very first single, “Yo Te Dije,” was released earlier this year.

[8/2] Preview: Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz at Texas Club Bar and Grill

August 2, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Jimmy GonzalezTonight, Tejano returns to the Texas Club Bar and Grill with the legendary Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz. The Brownsville native is a bona fide superstar and considered one of the best arrangers and songwriters in Tejano music, and is still going strong and cranking out the hits after beginning his career well over thirty years ago.

The story of Mazz is nothing short of amazing and is the stuff of movies. Jimmy Gonzalez has seen it all: countless hits, Grammy Awards, Tejano Music Awards, a famously flawed former frontman in Joe Lopez, a famous rivalry with fellow Tejano powerhouse La Mafia, highs and lows, and finally a resurrection with Gonzalez himself as the voice and face of Mazz. Through it all, Gonzalez has consistently written great songs and has continued to be one of the most popular, bankable and reliable acts in Tejano music.

Long story short: Lots of fans, classics and new hits, and well worth the cover charge to see one of the greats.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The show starts at 9 p.m., cover is $15, and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.

Gary HobbsOn Saturday, May 10, the Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes Tejano superstar Gary Hobbs. Famous for his smooth voice and movie star good looks, the charismatic hitmaker from Eagle Pass is an Austin favorite and frequent performer at Tejano music festivals here in the Live Music Capital of the World.

[4/5] Los Badd Boyz Del Valle and Da Krazy Pimpz at Texas Club Bar and Grill

April 5, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Texas ClubTonight conjunto returns to the Texas Club Bar and Grill with Los Badd Boyz Del Valle and Da Krazy Pimpz. The sounds of South Texas will fill the air at the southeast Austin club, with the Elsa-based Badd Boyz bringing their hardcore style from deep in the Rio Grande Valley and some first-rate flashy showmanship courtesy of the Pimpz from Eagle Pass.

Los Badd Boyz Del Valle have enjoyed immense popularity in the past few years with a couple of hit singles and albums, earning them a growing fan base that reaches from their home turf to Houston, where hardcore conjunto has exploded amongst a younger crowd. In 2011, the guys won the award for Best New Artist-Group at the Tejano Music Awards, and scored a big hit with “Eres Clicka.”

Da Krazy Pimpz came on the scene in 2007 with wild stage costumes and strong conjunto and cumbia chops. Led by accordion and sax player Eddie Jimenez, the group has recorded four albums with Tejano superstar Gary Hobbs on his AMMX Record label. The hard-working band has traveled all over the state and made their Austin debut at the 2013 Cinco de Mayo celebration at Fiesta Gardens.

Long story short: conjunto, cumbias…AWESOME suits from both bands, just a good ol’ time on the south side.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The doors open at 7 p.m., cover is $10 all night. 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621. Keep up with the Facebook event page here.

[11/30] Preview: Roberto Pulido y Los Clásicos at Texas Club Bar and Grill

November 29, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

Roberto PulidoSaturday, Nov. 30, Tejano legends Roberto Pulido y Los Clásicos return to Austin at the Texas Club Bar and Grill. The band led by the beloved Tejano music icon from Edinburg is sure to draw adoring fans from all over Central Texas to the southeast Austin club.

With a career spanning 40 years, “El Primo” is one of Tejano’s undisputed heavyweights, who began his music career playing the saxophone, which won him a scholarship to UT Pan American in Edinburg, where he studied to be a teacher. After choosing music over teaching, Pulido developed a sound firmly rooted in conjunto with the addition of a saxophone, helping to define the accordion-heavy post-orquesta progressive Tejano genre practiced by the likes of David Lee Garza y Los Musicales and La Tropa F. Hits like “Flecha Envenenada,” “Señorita Cantinera,” “Copa Tras Copa,” “La Tumba Sera El Final,” “Te Vi Partir,” as well as his collaborations with fellow legends Ruben Ramos and Little Joe as Los Tres Amigos, continue to be staples on playlists everywhere.

Along with his music, his personality has helped drive his popularity since the very beginning. Known for his humor, kindness, and down-to-earth persona, Pulido always makes time for his fans and always greets them with a smile. Even though he has played the same songs for decades, he always puts on a great show and seems to connect with each and every person in the audience. An avid outdoorsman and sports fan, he is genuinely every bit the down-home, regular guy he seems to be, despite being one of the most successful Tejano stars in history of the genre.

Long story short: It’s been a long time since El Primo has had a solo show here in the ATX. He’s played a couple of jamaicas here and there and had a guest spot with Los Texas Wranglers at this year’s Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival, but this show will be all Pulido. This is a must-see for hardcore Tejano music fans, with plenty of rancheras, smooth cumbias, and, of course, plenty of entertainment from the man himself.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m., and $12 after 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.
