[1/24] Preview: Jay Perez at Texas Club Bar and Grill

January 23, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Jay PerezSaturday Jan. 24, the Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes “The Voice” Jay Perez. The San Antonio superstar will make his debut at the southeast Austin Tejano hot spot, bringing a catalog of hits not only from his solo career but also from his time as a Latin Breed frontman and lead singer for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales.

Now with Freddie Records, Perez is known for his ability to sing nearly every genre. He effortlessly switches from Tejano to country to soul, giving the crowd some variety at each of his shows. His cover of soul standard “Me and Mrs. Jones” and his country tune, “Steel Rain,” are just two examples of his versatility. He is also known for his version of the unofficial Tejano national anthem, “Don Luis El Tejano.” A consistent hit maker with a strong fan base, Perez won Male Vocalist of the Year at the Tejano Music Awards from 2003 to 2010 before being unseated by Jesse Turner of Grupo Siggno in 2011.

Long story short: Classic Tejano by one of the masters trying out a new stage.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. Presale tickets are $12 and the cover is $15 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 502-4197. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[11/29] Preview: Audi y Zentimiento at Texas Club Bar and Grill

November 28, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

AudiSaturday, Nov. 29, the Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes Audi y Zentimiento. It will be the Austin debut for the Killeen-based group, and they’ll share the bill with Austin’s own Grupo Remedio at the southeast Austin Tejano club.

Unless they’ve been to Fan Fair in San Antonio, this may be the very first opportunity for many Austin fans to see Audi Castillon Portales, who recently relocated to Killeen from Fort Collins, Colorado. The Tejano music industry is hard enough, but trying to succeed from a non-Tejano stronghold outside of Texas is especially difficult. By making quality music, establishing a fan base through social media, and making the pilgrimage to San Antonio whenever possible, Audi’s hard work has paid off with Tejano Music Award nominations and all-star collaborations with the likes of Max Baca, Gabriel Zavala, Rebecca Valadez, Ram Herrera, and Rick Fuentes (Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution).

Since moving to Killeen, Audi has rebuilt her band, featuring the squeezebox wizardry of Austin’s own marvelous (and massively underappreciated in my opinion) Marcelo Gauna, and served as a celebrity judge in the Austin Tejano Music Coalition’s 2014 Tejano Idol competition last month. Her debut album, Donde Andaras, was released in 2011 and has released several singles from her upcoming album, Este Amor Puro.

Long story short: Of course, I always recommend that Tejano fans go to a show I preview. Especially when the cover charge includes an entire night of live Tejano music from two incredibly talented bands and is less than a Jumbo Jack with Cheese combo! Seriously…GO.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The cover charge is $5 all night long, and the doors open at 7 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 502-4197.

[10/17] Preview: Gary Hobbs at Texas Club Bar and Grill

October 17, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Gary HobbsTonight the Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes back Tejano superstar Gary Hobbs. Famous for his smooth voice and movie star good looks, the charismatic hitmaker from Eagle Pass is an Austin favorite and frequent performer at Tejano music festivals here in the Live Music Capital of the World.

After beginning his career nearly 30 years ago, Hobbs has worked hard to remain successful and popular in a difficult industry that has seen its ups and downs. In 2001, he began his own independent record label, AMMX Records, which, in addition to Hobbs himself, has recorded other top Tejano acts like The Hometown Boys, Ram Herrera, Grupo Stampede and Grupo Fama, and has expanded to include Norteño, Pop en Español, Cumbias, and Christian Music. While he has had many hits during his career, one of his most popular songs is “Las Miradas.”

Long story short: Gary always brings a crowd with his showmanship and solid, synthesizer-flavored Tejano.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The cover charge is $15 all night long, and the doors open at 7 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.

[10/4] Preview: Conjunto Baraja de Oro with Grupo Remedio at Texas Club Bar and Grill

October 4, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

baraja de oroTonight, Oct. 4, it will be another conjunto good time at the Texas Club Bar and Grill with El Conjunto Baraja de Oro and Grupo Remedio. The red-hot north Texas conjunto has become an Austin favorite after super successful appearances at the Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival, and the Cinco de Mayo and Diez y Seis de Septiembre celebrations presented by Fiestas Patrias of Austin.

Affectionately known as BDO, Conjunto Baraja de Oro is one of the hottest bands going these days. Husband and wife duo Mario and Betty Barajas are taking the conjunto (and Tejano) world by storm, boasting multiple Tejano Music Award nominations, incredibly well-attended shows, high-quality songwriting and recordings, and a loyal army of fans.

Mario and Betty may seem like newcomers, but Mario has been working hard for over 20 years playing accordion and singing in various Tejano groups. For over a decade, he and Betty have, with their super-talented band members, steadily built the phenomenon that is Conjunto Baraja de Oro. Their discography includes three studio albums, La Marca, The American Dream, and their most recent release, Tres.

Long story short: BDO is at the top of their game, and their show is not to be missed. Conjunto with plenty of accordion fireworks and great vocals. Austin’s own Grupo Remedio will also be taking the stage, so it should be a great night for dancing at the southeast Tejano hotspot.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. Cover is $8 before 9 p.m. and $10 after 9 p.m., and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621. Keep up with the Facebook event here.

[9/27] Preview: Marcos Orozco at Texas Club Bar and Grill

September 27, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

MarcosTonight, September 27, Marcos Orozco y Grupo Rebelde will take the stage at the Texas Club Bar and Grill. The award-winning Tejano superstar returns to the Live Music Capital of the World after the release of his latest CD, Musica En La Piel, earlier this year.

The multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and musician began his career in the 1980s with groups Blackjack, Powerhouse, and the legendary Fabulosos 4, but it was his time as the lead singer for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales that propelled him to Tejano music super stardom. His unmistakable romantic voice is on the megahits ”Tonta,” “Una Noche Mas,” “Tu Boca Roja,” and more, which are still on heavy rotation at Tejano music stations and on DJ playlists everywhere.

After his time with the Musicales, Orozco embarked on a successful solo career with his own group, Rebelde. To date the group has released eight albums, including four on his own independent label, Oromar Records. Tracks from his solo efforts include “Baila Morena,” “Costumbres,” “Una Historia de Amor,” and “Como Un Tigre.” Recently, he also covered the late Jenni Rivera’s “El Amor.”

Long story short: With one of the most beautiful and unique voices in Tejano music history belting out some of his classics and latest hits, the dancefloor at the southeast Tejano hot spot will be packed with shiny boots, sparkling belt buckles, and twirling cowboy hats.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The show starts at 9 p.m., presale tickets are $12 and the cover is probably $15 at the door. 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.

[9/13] Preview: Conjunto Romo at Texas Club Bar and Grill

September 13, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

conjunto romo

Tonight, Sept. 13, Texas Club Bar and Grill presents Conjunto Romo. The family band from Kyle, also known as “Los Little Rascals de Conjunto” will bring their hardcore conjunto to the southeast Austin Tejano hotspot on a weekend loaded Diez y Seis celebrations all over the ATX.

Considered rising stars on the conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. With two band members still in high school and one recently graduated, Conjunto Romo has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional conjunto sound and have established a strong following.

Long story short: There will be no synthesizers, no saxophones, or any of the extras that you would normally hear at a Tejano show. With no straight-up conjunto at either of the big events at Fiesta Gardens or Round Rock, hardcore conjunto fans and dancers will have an option on Saturday night.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The show starts at 9 p.m., cover is $5 all night, and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.

Augustin Ramirez, Street People and more at Frijolito’s Birthday at Texas Club Bar & Grill

September 6, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Texas ClubTonight, the Texas Club Bar and Grill will host a birthday celebration for KTXZ 1560 AM radio DJ Richard “El Frijolito” Martinez. Those scheduled to perform at the southeast Austin hotspot include Austin-area Tejano royalty Augustin Ramirez, Elvira Sanchez, and the newly re-formed Street People, and many more.

Since beginning his career in the 1960s, Ramirez has been prolific, recording scores of solo albums and collaborating with other legendary performers. Known to most as “El Guti,” Augustin’s classic sound features intricate guitar melodies supplied by the man himself, accentuated by big strong horns, and on occasion, accordion. Some of his greatest hits include “El Barco Chiquito,” “La Postera,” “El Parrandero,” “Tres Ramitas,” “Sangre de Indio,” and many more. Sanchez will also take the stage, lending her sultry vocals to a number of classic tracks.

Street People, led by Austin Tejano legend Leonard Davila, was one of the Live Music Capital’s most popular groups in early 1980s. Davila, a veteran vocalist and former member of Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution, resurrected the group earlier this year after a nearly 30 year hiatus. Fans have welcomed the group and their old school horn-driven sound with open arms and many are looking forward to their new album, due out later this year.

Long story short: An evening of classic Tejano celebrating one of Austin’s great voices. Frijolito’s show airs every Sunday afternoon from noon to 5 p.m. on KTXZ 1560 AM.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The show starts at 9 p.m., cover is $10 all night, and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621 or view the Facebook event page here.
