[8/22] Los A-T Boyz and Lobo IV at Texas Club Bar and Grill

August 22, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

los at boyzTonight, the Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes Austin’s own Los A-T Boyz and San Antonio’s Lobo IV to the stage.

Los A-T Boyz, formerly known as Alma Tejana, are known for their high energy live show, with la familia Rodriguez masterfully working the stage through each cumbia, ranchera, and charanga. Their sound draws from almost every genre, allowing their creative spirit and radiant energy to shine through during every performance and on every recording. The guys released a single last year, “Mundo de Promesa,” featuring Cacy Savala.

Much like The Hometown Boys, Lobo IV has a sound and lineup firmly rooted in Conjunto: accordion, bajo sexto, bass and drums. After enjoying some success in the 90s, they took a seven year break, coming back strong in 2007. They remain true to their original sound, which can be described as Conjunto with a twist, and have worked hard to break into the Austin Tejano scene, which is not easy to do.

Long story short: Expect a great high-energy stage show and sound from Los A-T Boyz, and some amped-up Conjunto from Lobo IV. A great combo.

On a personal note: Beloved A-T Boyz accordionist Paquito Rodriguez is battling a reoccurrence of the rare form of cancer he had a few years ago. Fans and friends from Austin and beyond have been sending prayers and healing energy to one of the best guys in Tejano music. Get well soon, Paq!

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. Cover charge is $8 before 9 p.m. and $10 after 9 p.m. Doors open at 5 p.m. and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 502-4197.

February 27, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

conjuntoSaturday, Feb. 28, conjunto reigns supreme at the Texas Club Bar and Grill! Two of the genre’s biggest acts, Corpus Christi’s own Boni Mauricio and Elsa’s Los Badd Boyz Del Valle will roll into town dressed to the 9’s ready to take over the southeast Austin hotspot for a night of hardcore accordion-driven conjunto.

Boni Mauricio, affectionately referred to as “El Mero Chingon,” is known for his pachuco style, unique voice, and commanding stage presence. With roughly 40 years in the music business in the Coastal Bend area, Boni has been around and played with many of the legends including his padrino, the late, great Tony De La Rosa. He formed his own conjunto, Los Maximos, in the early ’90s and developed a style firmly rooted in the no-nonsense, old-school De La Rosa tradition. He and the Maximos played at last year’s Austin Conjunto Festival (organized by Johnny Degollado) and their latest album, Mis Polkas Favoritas, is available now.

Los Badd Boyz Del Valle have enjoyed immense popularity in the past few years with a couple of hit singles and albums, earning them a growing fan base that reaches from their home turf to Houston, where hardcore conjunto has exploded amongst a younger crowd. In 2011, the guys won the award for Best New Artist-Group at the Tejano Music Awards and scored a big hit with “Eres Clicka.”

Long story short: Boni and the Badd Boyz put on some great shows. Colorful suits, Stacy Adams, acordéon y bajo sexto, polkas, cumbias, the works. If you dig Sundays with Conjunto Los Pinkys at the White Horse, you’ll enjoy this too. Puro South Texas style!

February 7, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Ruben RamosIt’s party time tonight at the Texas Club Bar and Grill! Austin’s own Ruben Ramos will be celebrating his birthday with a ton of Tejano friends at the southeast Austin club.

With a career spanning over five decades, two Grammy awards, and countless albums and collaborations, the handsome, charismatic, silver-haired Ramos is known for his soulful voice and suave persona. Backing him up is the big sound of the world-class Mexican Revolution, known for its funky accordion and hot brass section. Back in the 1980s, Ramos scored a hit with “El Gato Negro,” which quickly became his nickname among fans and musicians alike. He is also known for frequent collaborations with other artists, especially for his work with fellow legends Roberto Pulido and Little Joe as “Los Tres Amigos.” With other hits like “Canal Seco,” “Voy Navegando,” and “Tierras Planas Del West,” his music is a mainstay on Tejano playlists everywhere.

The Austin icon never disappoints a crowd, belting out his classic Tejano hits, and even dropping in a few Mariachi and R&B selections as well.

Long story short: No one parties quite like Ruben and his crew. Rumor has it that David Marez, Street People, Cañonazo, Nikki Lopez, and Raphael Rodriguez of Los A-T Boyz might show up. You really don’t know just who will walk in the door and join him on stage. Definitely worth the cover and then some.
