[10/20] Preview: Gilbert Alba Y Super City, Marky Lee y Hache III at Texas Club Bar & Grill

October 19, 2012 By Piper LeMoine

On Saturday, October 20, the Texas Club Bar and Grill will feature Tejano music  and…wait for it…breakdancing. Austin’s own Gilbert Alba Y Super City Band will take the stage, as will Houston’s Marky Lee y Hache III. Fans can also catch up with former breakdancing champions Rolando’s B-Boys.

Alba’s resume is impressive. With over four decades as a Tejano musician and bandleader, the guitarist and singer also spent some time with the legendary horn-driven group, The Latin Breed. His Super City Band will also welcome special guest vocalist Carlos Meda, a runner-up in last weekend’s Tejano Idol competition.

Hache III plays a brand of Tejano heavily infused with the more traditional Conjunto style, with strong lead accordion and a set list full of polkas. Frontman Marky Lee began his career with Lockhart’s Augustin Ramirez before moving on to The Hometown Boys, and most recently, Hache III.

The wildcard of the evening is a special appearance by Rolando’s B-Boys, an Austin-based breakdancing group that earned national acclaim in the early 1980s.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m. $12 cover after 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.

On Thursday, October 18, one of Austin’s most versatile bands will be performing at Nuevo León Restaurant in East Austin. Austin-based Calle Seis, considered by some to be a Tejano music “super group,” features Grammy Award-winning personnel who also perform with a few of the genre’s most popular and highly-regarded acts: Gary Hobbs, Little Joe y La Familia, and Austin’s own Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution.

But wait…there’s more! The seasoned virtuosos of Calle Seis play nearly musical genre at their shows, from Tejano to funk to salsa to R&B to country…I think you get the idea. It’s not rare for other Tejano music stars to make surprise guest appearances at these shows as well.

Nuevo León is located on the corner of East 6th and Onion Streets, just a few blocks east of I-35 and immediately north of Plaza Saltillo station. The music starts at 7 p.m., and as with almost every Calle Seis performance, there is no cover charge. All ages are welcome. The social media-savvy band plays several nights a week at various locations in the Austin area, and always posts the information on their Facebook page.

(10/14) Preview: Tejano Idol at Graham Central Station

October 12, 2012 By Piper LeMoine

On Sunday, October 14, at Graham Central Station in Pflugerville, Tejano music fans will get a glimpse of future stars at the finale of Canta Tejano Idol Finale, presented by the Austin Tejano Music Coalition. Twenty contestants from all over Texas (and as far away as Twin Falls, Idaho!) will perform in front of three celebrity judges, a crowd full of fans, the chance to compete for a cash prize and the opportunity to become the next Tejano music star.

Now in its second year, the competition accepted auditions online and also held auditions in San Antonio and in various locations around Austin. Judges then narrowed the field, selecting the twenty best contestants (including a 10 year-old from Pflugerville) for the finale.

The finale will feature performances by Austin’s own all-female Mariachi Las Tejanitas and the up and coming Tejano group La Distancia from San Marcos. The celebrity panel of judges includes Tejano music stars Raulito Navaira, and Grammy nominees Alfredo Antonio Guerrero of Tortilla Factory, and Shelly Lares, who also served as a judge last year. Lares will also perform at intermission.

Graham Central Station is located just east of I-35 North on Grand Avenue Parkway in Pflugerville. All ages are welcome for this event and the cover charge is $5 per person. The festivities are scheduled from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information and to learn about the contestants, visit austintejanomusic.com.
