[8/8] Preview: Cinco Doce and Bidi Bidi Banda at Holy Mountain

August 8, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Bidi Bid bandaTonight at Holy Mountain, Austin’s own Cinco Doce will share the stage with Bidi Bidi Banda. Fans should be prepared for lots of cumbias and lots and lots and LOTS of Selena.

Cinco Doce has roots in conjunto and has made its mark in recent years with a trademark sound heavily influenced by Tejano and rock, as well as other rhythmic genres like bachata, reggaeton, and hip-hop. Their great stage show, unique sound, and hip, urban-inspired image, have gained them a loyal following, particularly among younger listeners.

Bidi Bidi Banda is the top-notch Selena cover band fronted by the incomparable Stephanie Bergara. A life-long super fan, during each show Bergara transforms herself into the late Tejano superstar with several wardrobe changes, each one hand-made and painstakingly modeled after the slain singer’s iconic outfits. Backed by an incredibly talented band, it’s truly an experience and a must-see for anyone who knows all the words to “Como La Flor.”

Long story short: One of the very few times you’ll hear Tejano downtown. Cinco Doce always brings it and so does Bidi Bidi Banda. Hip-Hop artists TTBS and Lil T are also slated to perform, so it will definitely be a little something for everyone.

Holy Mountain is located at 617 E 7th St, at 7th and Red River in downtown Austin. Cover is $10 at the door. 21+ welcome. Join the Facebook event here.

[7/26] Preview: Rick Fuentes and Friends with special guest Juan P. Moreno at El Toro Negro

July 26, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Juan Moreno

The weekend’s not over! Tonight be sure and end your weekend with more Tejano and conjunto at Toro Negro Lounge, courtesy of Rick Fuentes and friends, with special guest, bajo sexto master Juan P. Moreno.

Best known to most as the longtime accordion player for Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution, Fuentes, also spent time with Chavela y Su Grupo Express and Fandango USA. A Grammy Award winner, Rick has an impressive resume as a producer, arranger, songwriter, and vocalist. During a gig, he’ll effortlessly switch from accordion to keys (sometimes during the same song) to bass or anywhere else.

Juan P. Moreno is one of the best bajo sexto players ever to pick up the instrument, at once able to compliment the bass line and embellish the melody like few others can. The multi-talented Moreno spent quite a few years with Jaime y Los Chamacos and also some time with David Lee Garza y Los Musicales before embarking on a successful solo career.

Long story short: Highly recommended, but especially for anyone who has never seen the bajo sexto acrobatics of Juan P. Moreno. It will be a great set with more talent Chris Rivera, Albert Garcia, and Jesus Herrera also sitting in…and who knows who else will show up?

El Toro Negro is located at 615 West Slaughter Lane, at the southwest corner of Slaughter and South 1st. Show starts at 9 p.m., 21+ welcome. $5 cover. For more information, call 512-632-9949 View the Facebook event here.

[7/24] Preview: Hometown Boys at OK Corral

July 24, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Tonighthometown boys The Hometown Boys make their debut at OK Corral. One of Tejano music’s most beloved bands comes back to the Live Music Capital of the World armed with a catalog full of classic hits and new releases for the crowd at the southside Tejano club.

Originally from Lubbock, the family band rose to fame in the 1990s, enjoying success unheard of for most conjuntos. They built their trademark sound on beautifully blended vocal harmonies, which were supported by a strong, steady, unrelenting conjunto beat and accentuated by the sharp, edgy, but smooth accordion of Joe Martinez. Hits like “Los Barandales Del Puente,” “Aquel Amor,” and “El Pintor” (penned by Austin’s own Johnny Degollado), continue to dominate playlists at Tejano music stations and in clubs everywhere.

After the untimely deaths of his sons, Roman Jr., Joe, Jesse, and Ricky, patriarch and bajo sexto player Roman Martinez Sr. continues to perform all their hits alongside son Bobby and daughter Rosie Perea to packed houses and die-hard fans all around the country. Accordionist Anthony Treviño does the signature Joe Martinez style justice, and the group has had success with several lead singers, including the recently joined veteran vocalist, Marky Lee.

Their most recent album, El Siguiente Capitulo, is available in record stores and online.

Long story short: They still jam and play all the favorites. They loved them at Tejano Ranch, they’ll love them at OK Corral too. Expect Cowboy hats, boots, Wranglers, belt buckles, and plenty of polkas.

OK Corral is located at 629 W Ben White Blvd, at the southeast corner of Ben White and South 1st. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information, message OK Corral on Facebook.
