[2/6] Preview: Sunny Sauceda and Art Tigerina at Tejano Ranch

February 6, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Art Sunny posterTonight will be electric at Tejano Ranch. All eyes will be glued to the stage as San Antonio powerhouses Sunny Sauceda and Art Tigerina bring their high octane show to the north Austin Tejano Club.

After starting out in Conjunto with his father, Sauceda began his professional career with Grupo Vida before branching out on his own. He also collaborated with other accordion greats Joel Guzmán and David Lee Garza on the album Polkas, Gritos y Acordeónes, winning both the Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tejano Album in 2005. Since releasing his first solo project, Sunny, also in 2005, the be-gloved acordeonista has released four more studio albums including 2010’s Homenaje A Mi Padre, which was a very personal tribute to his father who passed away late last year.

Art Tigerina, another alumnus of Grupo Vida, will also be there. The Grammy-nominated sax player and vocalist masterfully works the stage and will bring his passionate style to further compliment Sunny’s musical chaos.

Long story short: ENERGY. And lots of it. Both are sizzling performers and there’s never a dull moment. Definitely a spectacle and a thoroughly fun show.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m.The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m. and $12 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. Visit the event page on Facebook here.

[1/23] Preview: Los Garcia Bros. and La Tropa F at Tejano Ranch

January 22, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Los Garcia BrosFriday night, Jan. 23,  will be special double bill at Tejano Ranch, with Los Garcia Bros. and La Tropa F taking the stage. The flashy conjunto from Eagle Pass and the veteran family band from San Antonio are sure to light up the north Austin Tejano night club with their decades of hits and new material.

La Tropa F began as a family conjunto way back when as Los Hermanos Farias, with David Farias on accordion. After changing the name, La Tropa F went on to great success during the 1990s and was at the top of the Tejano charts along with other acts like David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, Ram Herrera, and Selena. After scoring with hits like “Juan Sabor” and “Tocando Puertas,” the group later broke up. David moved on to Los Texmaniacs with Max Baca and ultimately re-formed Los Hermanos Farias with brothers Joe and Juan. The current lineup is led by Jesse Farias. Their newest album, Reedifica Su Musica, is now available on Freddie Records.

After winning a Tejano Music Award for Best Conjunto Album, Los Garcia Bros. were a band on the rise, and were beginning to rival fellow big-time conjunto, the Hometown Boys, when accordionist and vocalist Jimmy Garcia died in a car accident in 2002 at age 27. Since then the band has continued to tour, record new albums and retain their loyal following. Their big hit was “Cuatro Paredes” off the album of the same title. The influence of the late Jimmy Garcia is still felt in several young bands, most notably with Kyle’s own Conjunto Romo.

Long story short: Lots of bang for your buck with this show. Squeezebox and thumping bajo sexto with plenty of rhythm. Interesting mix of Stacy Adams-lovin’ pachucos along with cowboy hats and belt buckles.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m.The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m. and $12 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. Visit the event page on Facebook here.

[1/16] Preview: Michael Salgado at Tejano Ranch

January 15, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Michael SalgadoFriday, Jan. 16, Tejano Ranch welcomes superstar Michael Salgado back to the stage. Fans will get a taste of Ramon Ayala-inspired, Norteño-flavored Tejano, courtesy of the San Antonio superstar nicknamed “El Zurdo de Oro.”

Probably best known for his 1995 hit, “Cruz de Madera,” Salgado’s music appeals to Tejano and Norteño fans alike, much like one of his idols, Ramón Ayala. In fact, the raspy-voiced southpaw accordionist even pays homage to Ayala on his album, Homenaje A Mis Idolos, released last year. Recently, Salgado has tried his hand at country music, recording “Honky Tonks and Cantinas” for his Grammy-nominated 2011 album, No Vengo A Ver Si Puedo…Si Por Que Puedo Vengo. He continued this trend with the single, “Buscando Amor,” a Spanish-language cover of the Johnny Lee classic “Lookin’ For Love,” rearranged as a cumbia.

His latest album, Nada Es Eterno, released on his own label, Zurdo records, features a single he recorded with his son Andres, titled “Por que Me Amas.”

Long story short: A little something for everyone from one of the most popular performers around, able to appeal to a wide variety of audiences.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $12 before 9 p.m, and $15 cover after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[12/19] Preview: David Lee Garza y Los Musicales at Tejano Ranch

December 19, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

DLGTonight, Dec. 19, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales return to Tejano Ranch. The “Poteet Posse” is one of the most successful and popular Tejano bands ever, and is sure to pack the dancefloor with their set list full of some of the genre’s biggest hits.

Over the past four decades, accordionist and bandleader David Lee Garza has built a musical legacy that few can match. While his group has been the launching pad for other legendary performers like Ram Herrera, Emilio Navaira, Oscar G, Jay Pérez, and Marcos Orozco, “DLG” has maintained a distinct sound that some say is quintessentially Tejano: bright accordion matched with keyboards and saxophone to a strong danceable beat.

The man himself is also known for frequent collaborations with other performers, including the album Polkas, Gritos y Acordeónes, with Joel Guzmán and Sunny Sauceda, which won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album. In fact, Garza’s newest album, Just Friends, features some of Tejano’s best voices and won the 2013 Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album.

Long story short: Hit after hit after hit, Tejano at its finest.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. $12 before 9 p.m., $15 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. View the Facebook event here.

[12/12] Preview: Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz at Tejano Ranch

December 12, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

mazzTonight, Dec. 12, Tejano Ranch welcomes back the legendary Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz. The Brownsville native and bona fide Tejano superstar is considered one of the best arrangers and songwriters in Tejano music and after beginning his career well over thirty years ago, he is still going strong and cranking out hit after hit.

The story of Mazz is nothing short of amazing and is the stuff of movies. Jimmy Gonzalez has seen it all: countless hits, Grammy Awards, Tejano Music Awards, a famously flawed former frontman in Joe Lopez, a famous rivalry with fellow Tejano powerhouse La Mafia, highs and lows, and finally a resurrection with Gonzalez himself as the voice and face of Mazz. Through it all, Gonzalez has consistently written great songs and has continued to be one of the most popular, bankable and reliable acts in Tejano music.

Long story short: Lots of fans, classics and new hits, and well worth the cover charge to see one of the greats.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m.The cover charge is $12 before 9 p.m. and $15 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. Visit the event page on Facebook here.

Tonight, it’s a pre-Thanksgiving party at Tejano Ranch! Fans can prepare for tomorrow’s feast with a triple-header featuring the red-hot accordions of veteran David Farias and Austin’s own AJ Castillo, along with frontman extraordinaire Art Tigerina at the north Austin Tejano hot spot.

He may seem young, but AJ has been around the music scene his entire life, growing up in a musical family along with his talented brother, Sergio. Many consider AJ to be part of the future of Tejano, because of his innovative interpretation of classics as well as some originals, throwing in influences and techniques from other genres, including jazz and hip-hop. His high-energy stage show only adds to his appeal with a younger crowd. AJ’s newest CD, Sin Limites, is available now and happens to feature tonight’s co-headliner David Farias on the single, “Dame Tu Amor.”

The Farias name should be familiar to Tejano fans as the supergroup, La Tropa F. Accordion master David Farias is also known for his work (and Grammy win for Best Tejano Album) with Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs, along with a successful solo career and 2012 reunion with brothers Joe and Juan as Los Hermanos Farias. Their album, Back on Track, was nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Tejano Album and featured the hardcore conjunto the brothers started out playing over three decades ago.

Also joining them onstage will be Art Tigerina, formerly of Grupo Vida. The Grammy-nominated sax player and vocalist masterfully works the stage and will bring his passionate performance to the already explosive lineup tonight.

Long story short: A great way to start of a Tejano Thanksgiving! Three fantastic, captivating performers…what more could you ask for?

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m.The cover charge is $15 all night long. 18+ are welcome. Visit the event page on Facebook here.

[11/7] Preview: The Hometown Boys at Tejano Ranch

November 7, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Hometown Boys

Tonight The Hometown Boys return to Tejano Ranch. One of Tejano music’s most beloved bands comes back to the Live Music Capital of the World armed with a catalog full of polkas, classic hits, and new releases for the crowd at Austin’s biggest Tejano club.

Originally from Lubbock, the family band rose to fame in the 1990s, enjoying success unheard of for most conjuntos. They built their trademark sound on beautifully blended vocal harmonies, which were supported by a strong, steady, unrelenting conjunto beat and accentuated by the sharp, edgy, but smooth accordion of Joe Martinez. Hits like “Los Barandales Del Puente,” “Aquel Amor,” and “El Pintor” (penned by Austin’s own Johnny Degollado), continue to dominate playlists at Tejano music stations and in clubs everywhere.

Sadly, the band has suffered unimaginable tragedies. With the untimely deaths of brothers Roman Martinez Jr. at age 45 in 1997, Joe at age 34 in 1998, Jesse (also at age 34) in 2002, and Ricky at age 48 in 2007, they not only lost band members, they lost family. Despite these losses, patriarch and bajo sexto player Roman Martinez Sr. continues to perform all their hits alongside son Bobby and daughter Rosie Perea to packed houses and die-hard fans all around the country. Accordionist Anthony Treviño does the signature Joe Martinez style justice, and the group has had success with several lead singers, including veteran vocalist Marky Lee, who recently rejoined the band.

Long story short: They still jam and play all the favorites. Another great night at the Ranch!

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m.The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m, and $12 cover after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. Visit the event page on Facebook here.

[10/31] Preview: Los A-T Boyz and Ruben Ramos at Tejano Ranch

October 31, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Tejano Ranch

Tonight, Tejano Ranch celebrates Halloween with two Austin Tejano powerhouses: Los A-T Boyz and the iconic Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution.

Los A-T Boyz, formerly known as Alma Tejana, are known for their high energy live show, with la familia Rodriguez masterfully working the stage through each cumbia, ranchera, and charanga.

Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution almost need no introduction. Led by the charismatic, silver-haired Ramos, the horn-driven ensemble has won Grammy Awards and maintained a solid following for decades.

Long story short: Halloween…costumes…two fantastic, fun-loving groups? Sounds like a party to me! Who knows what will happen? Apparently there’s a costume contest as well.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m. and $12 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. Visit the Facebook event page here.
