[5/22] Preview: Elida y Avante and Solido at Tejano Ranch

May 22, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Elida posterTonight will be the last Friday night at Tejano Ranch (more on that in a few). Tejano superstar Elida Reyna y Avante will bring her “A” game (as she always does), as will the super-popular Texas Norteño, Sólido.

About the groups…

In the past few years, Reyna has dominated Tejano music, consistently taking home honors at the Tejano Music Awards (including Female Vocalist of the Year every year since 2007!), as well as the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album in 2010. Her solo success, as well as her recent duets with another super-hot performer, Jesse Turner of Siggno, have firmly solidified her Tejano superstar status. Although undeniably gorgeous, she has written many of her own songs and has the chops to do any genre she chooses with her strong voice that is never shrill or grating.

Often categorized with other groups like Duelo, Siggno, and Intocable, all of whom play a style that some call “Texas Norteño,” the Rio Grande City-based Sólido borrows from both Tejano and Norteño, which are related genres, but still quite different. Sólido describes their sound as “romantic and melodic, ideal for dancing and singing,” and has remained popular and productive since the group’s nearly overnight rise to fame after signing with Freddie Records in the early 2000s. Their discography includes the albums Hasta La Cima Del Cielo, Nadie Como Tu (which won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album), Por Ti, Vuelve, En Vivo Contigo, Nuestro Amor, Cuidado, Que Importa, Te Va A Doler, and their latest album, Sentimientos. The group 2014 Tejano Music Award for Best Norteño Group.

Long story short: Super solid doubleheader from two of the genre’s most successful groups…a good blend of rancheras and cumbias, cowboy hats and mini-skirts.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $15 all night long. 18+ are welcome. Visit the event page on Facebook here.

———

A special note about the club and what its closing means:

Tejano Ranch has been a mainstay for Tejano fans for decades. The official announcement on their Facebook page says that the company already has plans for another location in Austin. But in the meantime, Austin has lost its only reliably Tejano club. And that’s kind of a big deal in a city known as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Other venues only have it every so often. Fans could reasonably expect live Tejano music every Friday night, but not anymore. Here’s to hoping another venue picks up the opportunity, soon.

[5/1] Preview: Michael Salgado at Tejano Ranch

April 30, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Michael SalgadoFriday May 1, Tejano Ranch welcomes superstar Michael Salgado back to the stage. Fans will get a taste of Ramon Ayala-inspired, Norteño-flavored Tejano, courtesy of the San Antonio superstar nicknamed “El Zurdo de Oro.”

Probably best known for his 1995 hit, “Cruz de Madera,” Salgado’s music appeals to Tejano and Norteño fans alike, much like one of his idols, Ramón Ayala. In fact, the raspy-voiced southpaw accordionist even pays homage to Ayala on his album, Homenaje A Mis Idolos, released last year. Lately,Salgado has tried his hand at country music, recording “Honky Tonks and Cantinas” for his Grammy-nominated 2011 album, No Vengo A Ver Si Puedo…Si Por Que Puedo Vengo. He continued this trend with the single, “Buscando Amor,” a Spanish-language cover of the Johnny Lee classic “Lookin’ For Love,” and rearranged as a cumbia.

His latest album, Nada Es Eterno, released on his own label, Zurdo records, features a single he recorded with his son Andres titled “Por que Me Amas.”

Long story short: A little something for everyone from one of the most popular performers around, able to appeal to a wide variety of audiences.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $12 before 9 p.m, and $15 cover after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome.

Grupo Vida

On Friday, Apr. 24, Totally Tejano Fridays continue at Tejano Ranch with Grupo Vida. The San Antonio show band will once again bring their big-time stage show and high-octane brand of Tejano to the North Austin club.

They might seem young with their hip, edgy look, but Grupo Vida has been around since the mid-1990s and are known for their energetic, amped-up style. After launching the careers of accordionist Sunny Sauceda and vocalist Eddie Gonzalez, Vida has found success and three Grammy award nominations with former singer and sax player Art Tigerina. The group has also ventured into country music with its alter ego, The Electric Cowboys, touring with some of the genre’s biggest stars and releasing its first country album in 2005.

Long story short: A big exciting Tejano show, with a strong chance of some country selections as well.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m, and $12 cover after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome.

[4/17] Preview: Conjunto Romo and Lucky Joe at Tejano Ranch

April 16, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Conjunto Romo posterFriday, Apr. 17, will be all about the squeezebox at Tejano Ranch. The north Austin Tejano club will welcome back Kyle’s own conjunto powerhouse Conjunto Romo, but will also present Mission, TX – based phenom Lucky Joe.

Considered rising stars on the conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. The family band has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional conjunto sound and have established a strong following, including a growing fan base in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley.

Speaking of the Valley, accordionist Lucky Joe will be making his Austin debut that evening. After gigging here and there for nearly 20 years with a variety of different groups, Lucky Joe earned the Best New Artist – Male trophy at 2014 Tejano Music Awards. This performance in Austin will also serve as a CD release party for Lucky Joe and his band’s latest release on Freddie Records, Muchacha Bonita, with several shows scheduled all over the Lone Star State.

Long story short: Squeezebox-squeezebox-squeezebox. Stacy Adams. Suits. Dresses. Polkas. This classy crowd is will pack the dance floor with the intricate partner dances that are the norm at conjunto clubs in San Antonio and further south. It’s also good to see some new blood at Austin’s biggest Tejano club – something I hope to see more of and write more about.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10 before 10 p.m. and $12 after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. For more information, call 512-834-2640.

[3/27] Preview: Los A-T Boyz and Yayo Castillo y Grupo Rumores at Tejano Ranch

March 25, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

YayoTotally Tejano Fridays continue on March 27 at Tejano Ranch with Austin greats Yayo Castillo y Grupo Rumores and Los A-T Boyz. There will be lots of love for these local groups as they both work the crowd full of longtime fans at the north Austin Tejano nightclub.

Rumores has been a fixture in the Austin Tejano music scene for decades, playing at countless venues, festivals, jamaicas, and private parties. Bandleader and lead vocalist Yayo Castillo is known for his strong, smooth voice and showmanship. Along with longtime band members Ignacio “Iceman” Castillo (saxophone/vocals) and David Guzman (guitar), Rumores is a tight, talented group that always puts on a great show.

Los A-T Boyz, formerly known as Alma Tejana, are known for their high energy live show, with la familia Rodriguez masterfully working the stage through each cumbia, ranchera, and charanga. [3/20] Preview: Los Palominos at Tejano Ranch

March 20, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

PalominosTotally Tejano Fridays continue March 20 at Tejano Ranch with Los Palominos. Far from the South by Southwest madness of downtown, the popular Uvalde-based family band known for their vocal harmonies and fusion of various south Texas styles, will be back at the north Austin Tejano club much to the delight of their die hard fans.

Since forming in the mid-1980s, the Arreola brothers have enjoyed great success with the unique sound and strong songwriting. Led by Johnny and James, they scored their first big hit with the cumbia “Corazon de Cristal” at the height of Tejano’s popularity in the 1990s. Los Palominos finished out the decade riding high with Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tejano Album for 1999’s Por Eso Te Amo.

Tragedy struck the tightly-knit band in 2001 when a tour bus accident killed their drummer, brother Jesse. The group was able to overcome this tragic loss with brother Julio taking over on drums and have continued to record and perform all over the country. They won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album for 2006’s Evoluciones. Their latest album released in December, Strait Tejano, is an album full of exquisite Tejano arrangements of George Strait classics.

Long story short: Be prepared for a sound that reflects a little of Ramon Ayala-inspired Norteño, accordion-driven and keyboard-embellished Tejano, and even some hardcore South Texas Conjunto, complete with some of the genre’s most perfect harmonies. And there will be more than a few Palomino-ized George Strait gems.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m, and $12 cover after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. Visit the Facebook event page here.

AJ Castillo FB

Tonight Tejano Ranch welcomes back Austin’s own A.J. Castillo. The handsome accordionist with the deep voice and scores of loyal fans will be once again bringing his new flavor of Tejano to the north Austin club while celebrating his birthday.

He may seem young, but he has been around the music scene his entire life. He grew up in a musical family along with his talented brother Sergio. Many consider A.J. to be part of the future of Tejano because of his innovative interpretation of classics as well as some originals, throwing in influences and techniques from other genres including jazz and hip-hop. His high-energy stage show only adds to his appeal with a younger crowd. A.J.’s newest CD, Sin Limites, is available now.

Long story short: A night of accordion fireworks and hot cumbias, for sure! A younger crowd will pack the dance floor for nearly every song.
