Photos: Austin Vida Free Week – “Futuro De Indie” at Stubb’s

January 4, 2015 By Ian Morales

Saturday, Jan. 3, we presented our annual signature Free Week showcase at Stubb’s. This year we focused on young Latinos doing big things in indie rock, a genre more and more young bi-cultural  Latino musicians will play in the future. To prove this theory, we curated a lineup that included young bands from not only Austin but also El Paso, San Antonio and Monterrey, Mexico. Those in attendance, whether they were Latino or not, loved what they heard.

The list of performers from beginning to end included Gus Goose (Monterrey), Femina-X (San Antonio), Migrant Kids (Austin) and Avindale (El Paso).

[11/9] Preview: Austin Vida showcase at Stubb’s ft. Cilantro Boombox

November 8, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Cilantro Boombox small webJoin Austin Vida this Saturday night, Nov. 9, at Stubb’s indoor as we present our last live music showcase of 2013. We’ve had a great year and we wanted our last showcase to celebrate the diversity of the Latin Music scene while adding some soul to the occasion via our special guest. With essentially three bands together who could be considered headliners in their own right, we promise good times for all in attendance from start to finish.

Opening the show is bilingual singer-songwriter Gina Chavez. An Austin staple, Chavez is the current winner of the “Best Latin Traditional” Austin Music Award. She is fresh off of an east coast tour and ready to start promoting new songs from her soon to be released studio album. Chavez performs at 9:30 p.m.

Following Chavez is special (non-Latino) guest, KP and the Boom Boom. Formed in fall of 2010 and fronted by the dynamic Katie Priestly, the band is Austin’s answer to The Brand New Heavies. Their music fuses elements of jazz, soul, funk and disco. See KP and the Boom Boom perform at 10:30 p.m.

Closing the night out is Austin-based Afro-Latin funksters Cilantro Boombox. The group formed when producer/bassist Felix Pacheco and Joe Willard of saxophonist Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears fame came together in 2010. They’ve been the opening act for Los Amigos Invisibles on multiple occasions in Texas and most recently opened for Café Tacuba. See Cilantro Boombox take the stage at 11:30 p.m.

Stubb’s is located at 801 Red River. Doors open at 9 p.m. Music starts at 9:30 p.m. All ages welcome. Advance tickets are available for $7 online here or $10 cover at the door. Visit our Facebook event page here to win tickets or the event post on Do512 here.
