[8/8] Preview: Cinco Doce and Bidi Bidi Banda at Holy Mountain

August 8, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Bidi Bid bandaTonight at Holy Mountain, Austin’s own Cinco Doce will share the stage with Bidi Bidi Banda. Fans should be prepared for lots of cumbias and lots and lots and LOTS of Selena.

Cinco Doce has roots in conjunto and has made its mark in recent years with a trademark sound heavily influenced by Tejano and rock, as well as other rhythmic genres like bachata, reggaeton, and hip-hop. Their great stage show, unique sound, and hip, urban-inspired image, have gained them a loyal following, particularly among younger listeners.

Bidi Bidi Banda is the top-notch Selena cover band fronted by the incomparable Stephanie Bergara. A life-long super fan, during each show Bergara transforms herself into the late Tejano superstar with several wardrobe changes, each one hand-made and painstakingly modeled after the slain singer’s iconic outfits. Backed by an incredibly talented band, it’s truly an experience and a must-see for anyone who knows all the words to “Como La Flor.”

Long story short: One of the very few times you’ll hear Tejano downtown. Cinco Doce always brings it and so does Bidi Bidi Banda. Hip-Hop artists TTBS and Lil T are also slated to perform, so it will definitely be a little something for everyone.

Holy Mountain is located at 617 E 7th St, at 7th and Red River in downtown Austin. Cover is $10 at the door. 21+ welcome. Join the Facebook event here.

[3/26] Preview: The Puro Chingon Social Club presents ‘Selena’ at The North Door

March 26, 2013 By Alyssa Morin

The North Door invites movie-goers to their weekly Free Film Tuesdays event. On March 26, the Puro Chingon Social Club and Free & Queer Cinema are teaming up to screen the film that kick-started JLO’s career- Selena.

The Puro Chingon Social Club is a relatively new addition to the North Door’s Free Film Tuesday family. The club was formed by the Puro Chingon Collective, an Austin Art Collective that works in specializing on zines, interactive theater, and public art interactions. They’ve recently created a ChingoZine, which is an art zine that promotes aspiring Latino artists.

This month’s screening of Selena is special. Mar. 31 will mark 18 years of Selena Quintanilla’s passing, which is why The Puro Chingon Social Club and Free & Queer Cinema  are turning this event into a celebration. There’s going to be a Selena music set playing her greatest hits while mix CD’s will be handed out. Best of all, there will be a Selena costume contest!

The film spans the life of Selena Quintanilla-Perez from her family upbringings, her soaring musical career in the Tejano genre and her tragic death. Selena was a Texas native that ultimately broke through the gender barriers in an industry overpowered by men. She became a culture icon, especially in the Latino community. Her legacy lives on through her music and 1997 biopic played by Jennifer Lopez.

The North Door is located at 501 Brushy St., next to the IH-35 frontage road. The building is located on the corner of the road. The screening will take place at the main stage. Doors open at 7:30 p.m and the show starts at 8:30 p.m. There is no cover. Beverages are sold to 21+ attendees. For more updates on the event visit their Facebook event page or The North Door’s website. For more information about Puro Chingon Collective visit their website.
