[9/26] Preview: Suns of Orpheus, Afrofreque, Paula Maya at Sahara Lounge

September 26, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

sahara sept 26Tonight, Sept. 26, Psychedelic Brazilian-influenced rock come together with a little bit of hip-hop/funk fusion at The Sahara Lounge to kick off the final weekend of the month. Suns of Orpheus and Afrofreque headline a showcase that World Music funksters won’t want to miss. Those who arrive early will be warmed up by the sweet sounds of Brazilian jazz-pop artist Paula Maya.

We’ve often said Suns of Orpheus is Austin’s Brazilian answer to bands like Steely Dan. The group is fronted by Brazilian born guitarist and songwriter Frederico Geib, whom many may recognize from his other bands Macaxeira Funk and Os Alquimistas. Their music fuses together elements of Brazilian-inspired funk, pop and psych-rock. While their music is difficult to classify, it is easy to enjoy.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 8 p.m. Music starts at 8:30 p.m. 21+ are welcome. Visit the Facebook event page on Facebook here.

[4/5] Preview: Body Rock at Sahara Lounge

April 5, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Today is the first Friday of the month and that means it is time to party once again with DJ Chorizo Funk and friends at Sahara Lounge for Body Rock. What started in 2010 at Plush is now one of the city’s best dance parties featuring the best old school soul, hip hop, funk, Afro-Latin and disco. Soul Train lines aren’t uncommon and the crowd typically lacks the pretentiousness of hipster scene. For those looking for a good time away from downtown, Body Rock is for you.

This month the curators of Body Rock welcome special guest DJ Orión from Peligrosa. Spinning along side his fellow Peligrosa member Chorizo Funk is nothing new as the two have performed at multiple venues together. The two will be joined of course by Body Rock co-founders and hosts Jbro and Tiger Lily of the Austin-based hip hop group Riders Against The Storm (RAS).

Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Party from 10 p.m to 2 a.m. 21+ welcome. Cover is $4. Visit the official Facebook event page here.

[3/22] Preview: Bombasta and Afrofreque at The Sahara Lounge

March 21, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

East Austin venue The Sahara Lounge has given a new home to bands from Latin, World and other eclectic genres that the city very much needed. Formerly TC’s Lounge, the venue not only has real history but a neighborhood bar vibe that is inviting to all.  This Friday the venue will play host to alternating sets from San Antonio’s “barrio big band” and one of Austin’s best fusion-funk bands.

Bombasta is no stranger to Austin. The Alamo City answer to Ozomatli is one of the more popular Latin fusion bands in Texas. With cumbia at their core, the group incorporates elements of hip hop, funk, reggae and salsa into their music. It is a sound that very much reflects the city where they are from.

Afrofreque is one Austin’s most prolific funk-fusion bands. Their music fuses elements of soul, reggae, funk, hip hop and Afrobeat. Their lyrics and message aim to be conscious while creative. Afrofreque is fronted by by MC Tigre Liu and features Claude McCann from Charanga Cakewalk and Los Bandidos Cosmicos.

The Sahara Lounge is located is 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[3/16] Preview: Austin Vida presents “Barrio Bash Vol. I” at Sahara Lounge

March 15, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

As the annual South By Southwest music fest nears its end, we want to give locals and welcomed visitors alike one more chance to see some of the country’s best Latin music before everything wraps up. We will be presenting five of our favorites from here in Texas to California on Saturday afternoon from noon to 5 p.m. at Sahara Lounge. No badges or RSVPs necessary.

We’re starting the day off with some good ole’ fashion Austin Conjunto goodness from Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia. East L.A.’s own Las Cafeteras follow with their brand of Son Jarocho, a regional folk musical style of Mexican Son from Veracruz. If you missed them during their Austin tour stop last year at Sahara Lounge, then make sure to catch their set at 1 p.m.

Things start to get rowdy (in a good way) when San Antonio-based punkeros Piñata Protest take the stage at 2 p.m. Ever seen a punk band with an accordion? You’ll love it. Think Dropkick Murphys meet Flaco Jiménez.

The West Coast takes over again at 4 p.m. with Los Angeles-based Latin roots artist La Santa Cecilia. No stranger to Austin, the group has performed at both South by Southwest and Pachanga Latino Music Fest. An obvious reflection of their home city, La Santa Cecilia’s music fuses elements of cumbia, bossa nova, rumba, bolero, tango, jazz, rock and klezmer music. Combine that with the powerful and sultry vocals of frontwoman Marisol Hernandez and you have something great.

Closing the party down is the Tucson big band, Sergio Mendoza Y La Orkesta. Lead by the multi-talented everything from keyboards and percussion to guitars and horns, the group may be responsible for making mambo popular again to the masses. The group caters to Latinos, jazz lovers and hipsters alike. If you didn’t see them at Pachanga Fest in 2010, be at Sahara Club at 4 p.m.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 11 a.m. Music at noon. 21+ welcome. No RSVPs or wristbands required. Food will be available for purchase from the Sahara Smokehouse Trailer. For map and location, click here. Visit the Facebook event page here.

RAS serve as hosts or hype men, but have been know to freestlye on occasion.
