Saturday morning, July 12, Zydeco returns to Mexitas Mexican restaurant with a morning performance from Ruben Moreno & Zydeco Re-Evolution. The Houston-based group will delight the breakfast crowd, who will surely take a trip or two around the dance floor in between gulps of coffee and bites of migas and bacon.
Bandleader Ruben Moreno grew up in Houston’s East End, listening to the sounds of legends like Clifton Chenier on the jukebox, immersed in Zydeco and Creole culture at his grandmother’s bar. After years of playing accordion and washboard with Zydeco mainstays like Clifton’s son, CJ Chenier and Grammy-nominated Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic, Moreno struck out on his own in 2011 with his own group, Zydeco Re-Evolution. He released his debut album Por Ti Volare later that year, featuring mostly original material written by Moreno himself.
Long story short: Austin doesn’t have a lot of Zydeco on a regular basis, so fans of this infectious music need to seize the opportunity to see it live whenever possible. This group has a lot of youthful energy to compliment the up-tempo, can’t-sit-down sounds that always come with this music. Plenty of room to dance, too!
Mexitas is located at the southeast corner of 12th street and I-35 near downtown Austin. Music is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All ages are welcome. Cover is $7. Visit the Facebook event page here.
