[8/22] Preview: Puro Chingón Collective’s Mural Blast at Red 7

Tonight the Puro Chingón Collective is celebrating the completion of a 96 ft. public mural on the alley entrance walls of popular Red River music venue Red 7 courtesy of Downtown Austin Alliance. The event will feature live music from Fernando Palomo, Kabombã, DJ Jus Alva and Flavor Raid (formerly End Wave). Complete information on the mural is available here.

The Puro Chingon Collective is an Austin-based art collective that works in specializing on zines, interactive theater and public art interactions. They’ve created a ChingoZine, which is an art zine that promotes and inspires aspiring Latino artists. The ChingoZine Booth at tonight’s event will have ChingoZine 3s, ChingoZine anniversary t-shirts, buttons, prints, and more.

[11/16] Preview: Peligrosa featuring Shawn Reynaldo at Red 7

On Friday, November 16, it is time again for the biggest and baddest Latin DJ crew take over Red 7. Peligrosa’s monthly residency is known as one of the best Latin dance parties in the country. Peligrosa spins the best music from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa with an electronic twist. Led by DJ Orion, Peligrosa is Manolo Black, DJ Dus (Corpus Christi), Pagame, Sonora (San Antonio) and King Louie. The crew also features friends VJ 4th Wall for visual projections that accompany the music and photographer Marcos Molina, aka Comandante Quito.

Joining Peligrosa this Friday will be Bay area DJ Shawn Reynaldo from Tormenta Tropical in San Francisco. Reynaldo is also the bossman at Bersa Discos, a record label that began in Buenos Aires, Argentina and is now based in San Francisco and Los Angeles, California. A long time Peligrosa homie, Reynaldo will be throwin’ down his own brand of tropical bass and electro-cumbia.

Cross collaboration tour between VICE and Indio Cerveza, Hola Indio made four stops at Red 7 in Austin this year. On Friday, November 2, the fourth and final installment was part of the Fun Fun Fun Fest ‘Nites aftershow series.  The tour was dedicated to showcasing the cross-influence of Mexican and American cultures in contemporary music and art.

Each event featured one Mexican headliner and local bands or DJs. Headlining Friday’s event was Monterrey, Mexico producer and mix-master Toy Selectah (Toy Hernández). Austin Vida photographer Kristie Bocanegra was at Red 7 and shot some photos of the night’s festivities.

[11/2] Preview: Hola Indio featuring Toy Selectah at Red 7

The final edition of the Hola Indio tour, a cross collaboration tour between VICE and Indio Cerveza, comes to Red 7 on Friday, November 2, as part of the Fun Fun Fun Fest ‘Nites aftershow series. The tour is dedicated to showcasing the cross-influence of Mexican and American cultures in contemporary music and art. The event will feature one Mexican headliner and local bands or DJs while showcasing two art pieces, both produced collaboratively by a Mexican artist and American artist. Friday’s installment of the tour will benefit the National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA).

Headlining Friday’s event is Monterrey, Mexico producer and mix-master Toy Selectah (Toy Hernández). As a producer, Hernández has worked with some of the biggest names in music including Calle 13, Cypress Hill and Café Tacvba to name a few. A founding member of the Mexican hip hop group Control Machete, Hernández now serves as Creative Director, A&R and CEO of his own production company and boutique label Sones del Mexside.

Co-headlining the bill with Toy Selectah will be San Antonio-based DJ/producer Mexicans With Guns performing as “Gun Selectah.” The lucha masked DJ is Exponential Records honcho Ernest Gonzales. [10/19] Preview: Peligrosa & Mixpak at Red 7

It is that time again you heepsters and electro-cumbia lovers. Austin’s biggest and baddest Latin DJ Collective, Peligrosa, is throwing their monthly party at Red 7 on Friday, October 19. Dance to the best music from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa with an electronic twist. Led by DJ Orion, Peligrosa is Manolo Black, DJ Dus (Corpus Christi), Pagame, Sonora (San Antonio) and King Louie.

This month’s event features special guests from Mixpak Records. Brooklyn bass queen Jubilee returns to Austin alongside fellow Brooklyn-based producer and label founder Dre Skull.  Austin’s own Dubbel Dutch rounds out the Mixpak/Peligrosa collaboration Friday night.  Be sure and give a listen to the audio samplings from the special guests below.

[9/29] Preview: Hola Indio at Red 7 featuring Dani Shivers

The next edition of the Hola Indio, tour a cross collaboration tour between VICE and Indio Cerveza, comes to Red 7 on Saturday, September 29. The tour is dedicated to showcasing the cross-influence of Mexican and American cultures in contemporary music and art. Each party will feature one Mexican headliner and local bands or DJs while showcasing two art pieces, both produced collaboratively by a Mexican artist and American artist. The third of four parties to hit Austin, the tour will benefit the National Museum of Mexican Art (NMMA).

Saturday’s headliner is Tijuana-based “spook-pop” artist Dani Shivers (You Schaffner of Ibi Ego). Her lo-fi brand of witch house fuses toy keyboards, sound effects from horror films and aggressive electronic dance music elements. Shivers’ full-length debut Jinx was released in 2011, on the Tijuana-based cassette-only label Prima Crush.

Supporting Shivers are Austin-based Feathers and Peilgrosa frontman DJ Orión. Mexican artists Yurex Omazkin and Edgar Orlaineta will showcase original works produced in collaboration with Ryan Travis Christian and Deitch Projects alumn Evan Gruzis. To RSVP, visit http://rsvp.vice.com/holaindio/.

[9/21] Preview: Peligrosa with Money Chicha at Red 7

Peligrosa is an Austin-based DJ collective known for throwing the biggest and baddest Latin-themed electronic dance parties. Their new monthly residency at Red 7 is the place to dance to the best music from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa with an electronic twist. Led by DJ Orion, Peligrosa is Hobo D, Manolo Black, DJ Dus (Corpus Christi), Pagame, Sonora (San Antonio) and King Louie.

The September Peligrosa event will feature Austin-based Money Chicha, Austin’s first chicha group. Money Chicha features Adrian Quesada and other members of Grupo Fantasma, Brownout and Ocote Soul Sounds. Their music incorporates cumbia with psychedelic rock elements including fuzz, reverb and heavy percussion.

[8/17] Preview: Krum Bums & Los Skarnales play Nick Curran benefit at Red 7

Nick Curran is blues-rockin’ bad ass that is embraced and loved by all who know him, but especially from the local punk rock community due to playing guitar for Dallas-based rockabilly great Ronnie Dawson. Curran also played with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, punk band Deguello and with Los Lowlifes.

In 2010, Curran was diagnosed with oral cancer. After a short stint being cancer free, the cancer returned in 2011. To assist Curran with medical expenses, a benefit concert has been put together by his friends and supporters tonight at Red 7 (indoor stage).

Headlining the benefit tonight at Houston’s Los Skarnales and Austin punk rock heavyweights, Krum Bums. Also on the bill are Hipsterectomy, Black Irish and Mr. Lewis & The Funeral 5. Austin’s punkeros from all walks of life will be moshing for a good cause.
