Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance and Cultural Center presents “Mami Boricua” in December

November 29, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

When the Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance and Cultural Center was founded, they had a three-member dance company and an annual production program. Currently the non-profit organization offers more than 12 annual programs for all ages and has a 20-member folklore company of dancers and musicians. The center aims to promote cultural pride and awareness through performances and cultural programs by celebrating history and cultural traditions in the performing folkloric arts. The organization makes Texas proud as the only cultural center in Texas and the surrounding states associated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture that offers cultural programming and a professional performing company.

Every year, the “Sembrando Herencia” production serves to bring forgotten pieces of Puerto Rican heritage to life with dance, live theater and music. This year’s 10th annual production is “Mami Boricua” written by Tekina-eiru’ Maynard and produced in collaboration with Teatro Vivo’s director Rupert Reyes and researcher Zulmarie Alverio. The musical pays tribute to the Puerto Rican women who contributed to union efforts to improve wages and working conditions for garment industry workers in New York City in the late 1950s.

“Mami Boricua” premieres Sunday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. at the Davis Auditorium at the Texas School For the Deaf located at 1102 S. Congress Ave.  Adult tickets in advance are $12 and $15 at the door. Children tickets (ages 3-12) are $5 and children 2 and under get in free. Tickets can be purchased online without service charge here. This production is sponsored in part by Target, the Texas Commission on the Arts and La Peña through a grant by Humanities Texas and the City of Austin Cultural Arts Division.
