August 21, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

AJ CastilloTonight, OK Corral will welcome A.J. Castillo for the very first time. The Austin native will be bringing his “New Movement” flavor of Tejano to what will likely be an adoring hometown crowd at the South Side club.

He may seem young, but he has been around the music scene his entire life, growing up in a musical family along with his talented brother Sergio. Many consider A.J. to be part of the future of Tejano, because of his innovative interpretation of classics as well as some originals, throwing in influences and techniques from other genres, including jazz and hip-hop. His high-energy stage show only adds to his appeal with a younger crowd. A.J.’s newest CD, Sin Limites, is available now.

Long story short: A night of accordion fireworks and hot cumbias, for sure! Sergio will likely be on-hand, and maybe a few other surprises. A younger crowd will pack the dance floor for nearly every song.

[7/24] Preview: Hometown Boys at OK Corral

July 24, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Tonighthometown boys The Hometown Boys make their debut at OK Corral. One of Tejano music’s most beloved bands comes back to the Live Music Capital of the World armed with a catalog full of classic hits and new releases for the crowd at the southside Tejano club.

Originally from Lubbock, the family band rose to fame in the 1990s, enjoying success unheard of for most conjuntos. They built their trademark sound on beautifully blended vocal harmonies, which were supported by a strong, steady, unrelenting conjunto beat and accentuated by the sharp, edgy, but smooth accordion of Joe Martinez. Hits like “Los Barandales Del Puente,” “Aquel Amor,” and “El Pintor” (penned by Austin’s own Johnny Degollado), continue to dominate playlists at Tejano music stations and in clubs everywhere.

After the untimely deaths of his sons, Roman Jr., Joe, Jesse, and Ricky, patriarch and bajo sexto player Roman Martinez Sr. continues to perform all their hits alongside son Bobby and daughter Rosie Perea to packed houses and die-hard fans all around the country. Accordionist Anthony Treviño does the signature Joe Martinez style justice, and the group has had success with several lead singers, including the recently joined veteran vocalist, Marky Lee.

Their most recent album, El Siguiente Capitulo, is available in record stores and online.

Long story short: They still jam and play all the favorites. They loved them at Tejano Ranch, they’ll love them at OK Corral too. Expect Cowboy hats, boots, Wranglers, belt buckles, and plenty of polkas.

OK Corral is located at 629 W Ben White Blvd, at the southeast corner of Ben White and South 1st. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information, message OK Corral on Facebook.

June 26, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Bobby PulidoFriday, June 26, OK Corral presents the return of Bobby Pulido to the Live Music Capital of the World. The Tejano and Regional Mexican heartthrob from Edinburg hasn’t played a solo show in Austin in quite some time and will be making his debut at the south side Tejano night spot much to the squealing delight of his hardcore fans.

Bobby, the son of beloved Tejano legend Roberto Pulido, first came on the scene during the golden age of ’90s Tejano with hits like “Desvelado,” “A Tu Lado,” and more. [6/19] Preview: La Tropa F and Los Desperadoz at OK Corral

June 19, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Tropa FTonight will be another doubleheader at OK Corral with La Tropa F and Los Desperadoz. The veteran family bands will bring some squeezebox-driven Tejano to the south Austin club to the delight of their longtime fans.

La Tropa F, now based in San Antonio, began as a family conjunto way back when as Los Hermanos Farias, with David Farias on accordion. After changing the name, La Tropa F went on to great success during the 1990s and was at the top of the Tejano charts along with other acts like David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, Ram Herrera, and Selena. After scoring with hits like “Juan Sabor” and “Tocando Puertas,” the group later broke up, with David moving on to Los Texmaniacs with Max Baca, and ultimately re-forming Los Hermanos Farias with brothers Joe and Juan. The current lineup is led by Jesse Farias, and their newest album, Reedifica Su Musica, is now available on Freddie Records.

After bursting onto the scene in the late 1980s as Los Test Tube Babes and renaming the group Los Desperadoz, Mike, Lee, and P.J. Villarreal have carried on their family musical legacy with numerous hits, strong fan base and a prolific discography. Anyone who has spent any amount of time at a Tejano club will likely recognize one of their biggest hits, “El Amor Que Soñe,” often referred to as “the coughing song,” because the group included a cough at various places throughout the song.

Long story short: If you loved 90s Tejano firmly rooted in Conjunto, this show is for you. Lots of cowboy hats, belt buckles, Wranglers, and boots tonight at OK Corral.

OK Corral is located at 629 W Ben White Blvd, at the southeast corner of Ben White and South 1st. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge isn’t listed, but its probably $15 or $20 all night. 18+ are welcome. For more information, contact OK Corral on Facebook.

[6/12] Preview: Siggno and Vision at OK Corral

June 11, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

SIggnoFriday, June 12, will be a doubleheader at OK Corral. In the past couple weeks, the Southside venue has hosted Regional Mexicano with Erick y Grupo Massore, Tejano with Los Palominos, and this week they’ll venture even further with Santa Rosa-based superstars Grupo Siggno and special guest, San Antonio’s own Grupo Vision.

Siggno is hard to classify. While they have been one of the most successful groups in Tejano music in the past few years, they also won the 2008 Latin Grammy for best Norteño album, won the 2013 Tejano Music Award for best Norteño Album, and frontman Jesse Turner played drums for conjunto legend Ruben Vela. Looking at their “guy-liner” and heavy makeup on stage, they could be mistaken for a late ’80s hair metal band, but there’s also a bit of urban edge to Turner himself. The group’s latest album, Zodiacal, was released in December 2014.

The multi-talented Turner writes songs, plays accordion and a number of other instruments, and won Entertainer of the Year at 2013 Tejano Music Awards. He also took home Best Male Vocalist honors at the 2011 and 2012 Tejano Music Awards, snapping the 8-year winning streak of Tejano superstar Jay Perez in the category. His award-winning duets with Elida Reyna have also been enormously popular, helping to further propel both of them into superstar status.

Joining Siggno (and making their Austin debut!) will be Grupo Vision. Described as “Norteño lite,” their smooth sound is remarkably similar to Siggno or Intocable. Their vocals and accordion all compliment each other well on their easy-going rancheras and will be a big hit with the crowd here in Austin. I wouldn’t be surprised if they are invited back again soon. Their 2014 album, En Tus Manos, is available everywhere and features a duet with big-time Tejano and conjunto star, accordion master David Farias.

Long story short: Siggno always puts on a great show, and their massive popularity in the ATX pretty much guarantees a packed house. Look for Vision to earn a club full of new fans too.

OK Corral is located at 629 W Ben White Blvd, at the southeast corner of Ben White and South 1st. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $20 all night. 18+ are welcome. For more information, contact OK Corral on Facebook.

[6/5] Preview: Los Palominos at OK Corral

June 5, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Los PalominosTonight, OK Corral breaks in their live Tejano lineup with Los Palominos. The popular Uvalde-based family band known for their vocal harmonies and fusion of various south Texas styles will make their debut at the South Side Tejano night spot, much to the delight of their die-hard fans.

Since forming in the mid-1980s, the Arreola brothers have enjoyed great success with the unique sound and strong songwriting. Led by Johnny and James, they scored their first big hit with the cumbia “Corazon de Cristal” at the height of Tejano’s popularity in the 1990s. Los Palominos finished out the decade riding high with Grammy and Latin Grammy Awards for Best Tejano Album for 1999’s Por Eso Te Amo.

Tragedy struck the tightly-knit band in 2001 when a tour bus accident killed their drummer, brother Jesse. The group was able to overcome this tragic loss with brother Julio taking over on drums and have continued to record and perform all over the country. They won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album for 2006’s Evoluciones, and their latest album, Strait Tejano, an album full of exquisite Tejano arrangements of George Strait classics, was released in December.

Long story short: Be prepared for a sound that reflects a little of Ramon Ayala-inspired Norteño, accordion-driven and keyboard-embellished Tejano, and even some hardcore South Texas Conjunto, complete with some of the genre’s most perfect harmonies. And there will be more than a few Palomino-ized George Strait gems.

On another note: It’s good to see that the owners of Tejano Ranch didn’t miss a beat in relocating to another place so soon! It’s also good to see Chris “Tejanoman” Tristan back in the mix along with fellow DJ’s Dee Nice and DJ Torito. Fans should also be on the lookout for DJ Romeo on Saturday nights too.

OK Corral is located at 629 W Ben White Blvd, at the southeast corner of Ben White and South 1st. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $15 all night. 18+ are welcome.
