This weekend Denton-based rockero Bubba Hernandez will be celebrating the release of his third full length album, Big Pounding Heart. On the new album, the former Brave Combo bassist worked with Los Angeles-based producer and guitarist Scrote (Daniel Johnston, No Doubt). Already receiving positive reviews, Big Pounding Heart promises to please fans both old and new while offering something different from Hernandez’s previous releases.
Hernandez will be performing a headlining CD release show here in Austin on Friday, August 17, at Ruta Maya. His backing band, Los Super Vatos, will include his brother Ricky Hernandez and brothers Robert and Chris Hokamp. Bubba Hernandez y Los Super Vatos perform at 10:15 p.m.
Opening the night’s showcase is Houston-based Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man. The former Los Skarnales member has created a unique project that combines music from the Texas – Louisiana region. The danceable fusion of sounds incorporates elements of conjunto, country and rockabilly. Nick Gaitan & The Umbrella Man perform at 9 p.m.
Local support for Hernandez will come from El Tule. The Latin fusion collective is lead by John “El Mero Guero” Dell and backed by a group of talented multicultural musicians. Able to get the party going with salsa, mernegue, cumbia and reggae fusions, El Tule are a great compliment to Hernandez. El Tule perform at 11:30 p.m.
