April 25, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Peligrosa member and Lords of Wax champion DJ Chorizo Funk and percussionist Rudy Rex released their second installment of their Clásico series today via Soundcloud (see player below). Clásico Vol. 02 was recorded live from their April set at Takoba. This set includes more Brazilian music than their first release along with the usual mix of salsa, cumbia and Afro-Latin music.

The Clásico mix series is named after Chorizo Funk’s new live performance series he started last November with percussionist Rudy Rexx, a longtime percussionist who played with numerous groups including Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Maneja Beto and Vallejo to name a few. The two started Clásico as a way to go beyond the standard DJ set.

Empresarios release new remix for “La Secretaria”

February 12, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Washington D.C.-based Tropicaliente group Empresarios releases new track “Secretaria (Empresarios Dubplate Especial).” This new track is a remix of classic hit “La Secretaria,” originally made popular by Salvadorian cumbia ensemble Los Hermanos Flores almost 30 years ago. With this new remix, the Empresarios hope to turn this traditional cumbia into a more modern version to introduce to new listeners and drag their attention to the original hit.

Empresarios signature dance-party sound with loud horns and percussion is the result of mixing some classic Latin grooves. Their title of “Kings of Tropicaliente” – a Caribbean music style- comes from each one of the band members combining salsa, dub, cumbia, house and reggae to form their very unique style. Their most recent album El Sonido Mágico was released in November of last year. This album features songs “Salsa de Gala,” “Volume” and “7th Street Groove,” among others. As always, you can be sure the Empresarios will make you want to stand up and dance.

You can listen to the Empresarios new remix “La Secretaria (Empresarios Dubplate Especial)” below and download here.

Download: “Olé” by Cupéro

January 25, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

New York- based singer-songwriter Cupéro (promo photo by Steven Halin)

New York-based pop-rock artist Clarissa Cupero released “Olé,” her newest single from her third EP, released on Jan. 22. “Olé” –a common expression used in Spain- was inspired by her experiences while living in Spain and highly influenced by Flamenco music and the Spanish culture. Cupéro performed “Olé” and other Spanish and English songs at a local Flamenco bar in Sevilla, where she managed to gather bilingual crowds.

Although Cupéro is a non-Latino, she believes in promoting cross-cultural understanding between the Latin and American music demographics. Both her passion for Spanish and admiration of the Latino-culture have led her to become one of the few artists to successfully crossover from English to Spanish, using as her biggest influence the 17-times Latin Grammy-winner, Juanes. She first started singing when she was only four-years-old, then learned to play the piano at the age of nine and the guitar at the age of sixteen. Since then, Cupéro has been a two-time finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her songs “Voces,” which talks about the social and governmental struggles within Latin American societies, and “Las Sombras,” which also made the first round Grammy ballot for Record of the Year in 2011.

Los Angeles-based vallenato quintet Very Be Careful will release their new song “El Millonario” on Jan. 8. The new single, which will also be released on 7-inch vinyl for those who prefer to own a physical copy of it, will be released on the label Steady Beat Recordings. “El Millonario” is part of Very Be Careful’s sixth studio album ¿Remember Me From The Party?, released in October 2012 on Downtown Pijao. Download: “Chorizo Chunks 13” by Chorizo Funk

September 26, 2012 By Chorizo Funk

Here it is! Number 13 in the Chorizo Chunks series! As always with my Chorizo Chunks, this was recorded live. This mix series captures one of my favorite parts of dejaying; playing for a crowd. The songs that I play and the way that I mix them is influenced by the vibe of the party, so it’s always different. It’s like a party frozen in time.

This is how it went down in July 2012 at Hotel Vegas for the Night Fever! party. Here is half of my opening set for J Boogie. I took full advantage of my opening slot and played a range of some of my favorite songs from P-funk to cumbia to Latin Soul to Nu-Disco (I think) to some boogie. If you enjoy, share it with your folks…don’t hog the funk!

Download: “Republique” mp3 by I Can Chase Dragons!

June 4, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Mexican indie rock band The Plastics Revolution lead singer Julio Gudiño, combines bilingual lyrics and electronic synthetic loops on his new solo project I Can Chase Dragons! Based out of Boston, he creates music that is just as imaginative and dreamy as the name suggests. He experiments with Mexican folk ballet, some ’60s rock and just a mixture of random sounds to achieve a fanciful atmosphere. Soon to accompany him on his live set will be a drummer and bassist.

As if being the front man of a band and starting a side project wasn’t enough, Gudiño has even created a Mexican indie label called Dos Pelícanos. The label’s first release was I Can Chase Dragons’! debut album, Expansión, with eight tracks filled with experimental pop. And of course, Gudiño does all this while going to school in Boston.
