[1/16] Preview: Discos Peligrosa launch party featuring Kiko Villamizar at Empire Control Room & Garage

Discos Peligrosa flierFriday, Jan. 16, may be one of most important and memorable days in the history of Latin music in Austin. Orión García, DJ and founding member of the Austin-based DJ collective Peligrosa, is celebrating the launch of his new Discos Peligrosa record label at Empire Control Room & Garage.

The launch party is not only in celebration of the label’s birth, but also to celebrate the release of the label’s debut album from Austin-based singer, songwriter and musician Kiko Villamizar. Titled La Remolancha, meaning “beetroot” in Spanish, the album is an eclectic fusion of Afro-Colombian and Caribbean rhythms. La Remolancha also features guest appearances from García, Cuban rapper Odaymara “Pasa” Kruda of Krudas Kubensi and local acordeonista Susan Torres.

To round out an incredible night of Latin music, Austin-based chicha band and Grupo Fantasma side-project Money Chicha is performing.

On the patio will be the usual third Friday throwdown from Peligrosa with members Pagame, King Louie, Manolo Black, Sonora , DJ Manny, El Dusty and Chorizo Funk. Anytime these guys come together, it is special. Friday night will be no different. For more on Peligrosa, click here.

[7/11] Preview: Clandestino All Stars & Money Chicha at Symphony Square

Money Chicha Man Chau July 11Friday, July 11, Austin-based promoter Border Sessions will host a great two band lineup that includes Austin’s first chicha band and a new band with many of those members paying tribute to one of their faves at Symphony Square. It will be a rare treat for Latin Alternative fans as the Clandestino All-Stars bring the spirit of Manu Chao to life (he’s still alive, don’t worry) by performing his classic album Clandestino in its entirety.

Clandestino All-Stars are an all-star group featuring members of Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Master Blaster Sound System and a few other bands. They made their debut at Mohawk in May with many left wanting more.

Money Chicha are composed of members from Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. Their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia, incorporating the psychedelic sounds of guitars, fuzz, and reverb with heavy percussion. If you’ve never heard chicha music live, Money Chicha is a good place to start.

Money Chicha July 4Celebrate our great nation’s independence Latino estyle this Friday at Empire Control Room & Garage with Austin’s first (and baddest) chicha group, Money Chicha. They will be joined by some of Austin’s finest Latin bands of various styles and genres, offering attendees a look at what our city has to offer. You’ll want to come early and stay late.

Headliners Money Chicha are composed of members from Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. Their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia, incorporating the psychedelic sounds of guitars, fuzz, and reverb with heavy percussion. Money Chicha peform at midnight.

Getting the party going for Money Chicha are salsa-fusion band La Vida Buena, Urban Tejano group Son De Rey and melodic-indie rockers Migrant Kids. Visit the Facebook event page here for set times. See music videos below for a quick look and listen.

While Austinites are getting ready for the big Pachanga Latino Music Fest (Pachanga) this weekend, a few unofficial pre-parties are poppin’ up including a great two band bill at Gypsy Lounge on Friday, May 9. The bill includes Austin-based psychedelic chicha band Money Chicha and South American-fusion band, La Frenetika. Although not an official Pachanga pre-party, the Facebook event page does mention Pachanga ticket giveaways will happen throughout the night.

Headliners Money Chicha are one of the many bands in the Grupo Fantasma family of bands that includes Brownout, Spanish Gold, Ocote Soul Sounds and The Echocentrics. Their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia with elements of  psych-rock.

Openers La Frenetika are big in membership and big in sound. The Latin-fusion collective performs a medley of various original songs and covers of popular vallenato, gozadera, Colombian cumbia and guapacha classics from South America.

Featuring members of Grupo Fantasma and Brownout, their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia.

On Saturday, Apr. 5, Money Chicha will be performing a headlining show at Empire Control Room & Garage. They will be joined by two of Austin’s finest, Afro-Latin fusionists Cilantro Boombox and the Afrodelic funksters, The Golden Dawn Arkestra. The best part? We have a couple of guest list spots we are giving away to a couple of our lucky Austin Vida readers.

The giveaway will be conducted as a raffle from our email list. Just click “enter the drawing” below after submitting your full name and email address. [10/31] Preview: Money Chicha w/Selena Y Los Burritos at Holy Mountain

Money Chicha Oct 31 Halloween is finally here Austin! You’ve got your slutty and/or zombie costume and you are ready to head out. If you’re looking to enjoy good Latin music away from the tourists and on-lookers on 6th Street, head over a few blocks down Red River as Holy Mountain plays hosts to a Selena tribute band and Austin’s first Chicha band. Be careful though zombies as you will want to make sure the door guy can recognize you from your I.D.

Money Chicha is Austin’s first chicha band, but with a modern twist of course. Their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia, but with elements of  psych-rock. A “super group” side project of sort, members of Money Chicha also perform with Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Ocote Soul Sounds and The Echocentrics to name a few. Money Chicha peform at midnight.

Austin-based Selena tribute band Selena Y Los Burritos open the show. Those familiar with the Austin indie scene may recognize members of the band from Dikes of Holland. For you diehard Selena fans thinking about attending, understand it is a fun side-project and is not meant to be taken that seriously. Selena Y Los Burritos perform at 11 p.m.

[10/10] Preview: Money Chicha and DJ Orión at Frank

Tonight local hot doggery and live music venue Frank is the place to be for live Latin music. Day three of Opus, a three night event that features bands and DJs presented by Frank and Red Bull, brings the psychedelic sounds of Austin’s Money Chicha with Peligrosa frontman DJ Orión spinning before and after the band. It is great way to warm up, Latino estlye, before the second weekend of the big fest and the happenings around it this weekend.

Money Chicha is Austin’s first chicha band, but with a modern twist of course. Their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia, but with elements of  psych-rock.
