[7/12] Preview: Zydeco breakfast with Ruben Moreno & Zydeco Re-Evolution at Mexitas

July 11, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Ruben MorenoSaturday morning, July 12, Zydeco returns to Mexitas Mexican restaurant with a morning performance from Ruben Moreno & Zydeco Re-Evolution. The Houston-based group will delight the breakfast crowd, who will surely take a trip or two around the dance floor in between gulps of coffee and bites of migas and bacon.

Bandleader Ruben Moreno grew up in Houston’s East End, listening to the sounds of legends like Clifton Chenier on the jukebox, immersed in Zydeco and Creole culture at his grandmother’s bar. After years of playing accordion and washboard with Zydeco mainstays like Clifton’s son, CJ Chenier and Grammy-nominated Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic, Moreno struck out on his own in 2011 with his own group, Zydeco Re-Evolution. He released his debut album Por Ti Volare later that year, featuring mostly original material written by Moreno himself.

Long story short: Austin doesn’t have a lot of Zydeco on a regular basis, so fans of this infectious music need to seize the opportunity to see it live whenever possible. This group has a lot of youthful energy to compliment the up-tempo, can’t-sit-down sounds that always come with this music. Plenty of room to dance, too!

Mexitas is located at the southeast corner of 12th street and I-35 near downtown Austin. Music is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. All ages are welcome. Cover is $7. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[10/4] Preview: Joel Guzman and Sarah Fox “Save Our Youth Fundraiser” at Mexitas

October 3, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

joel_fundraiserFriday, Oct. 4, Joel Guzman and Sarah Fox will take the stage at Mexitas for a fundraiser for Austin youth. The Texas music power couple will bring Conjuntazzo, their special brand of Conjunto, to the downtown restaurant and music venue to raise funds for Red Salmon Arts’ Save Our Youth (SOY) program for “hard to reach” youth.

The charismatic Guzman has long been known for his amazing skill, versatility and virtuosity, with projects ranging from blues to rock to Americana and of course, his roots, Tejano and conjunto. In 2005, he won a Grammy award for Best Tejano Album, along with fellow Tejano accordion masters David Lee Garza and Sunny Sauceda, for their album, Polkas, Gritos y Acordeones. Fox is a gifted bilingual singer-songwriter with an equally diverse body of work who has been the driving force behind Conjuntazzo, Los Aztex, and the Latin Rock outfit Latinology.

Red Salmon Arts is a Native American/Chicano based cultural arts organization with a history of working within indigenous communities of Austin since 1983. Save Our Youth (SOY), emphasizes cultural knowledge and pride, and seeks to empower “hard to reach” young people by redirecting their negative activities into positive and reactive outlets through participation in workshops focusing on culture, arts, and literacy. For more information about the group’s outreach efforts and other activities, visit their website.

Long story short: If you caught the KLRU special Vamos Al Baile, you got a taste of Joel and Sarah y Conjuntazzo at the top of their game. Lots of traditional Conjunto, and maybe a few curveballs thrown in as well.

Mexitas is located at 1109 N. I-35 at the southeast corner of 11th Street and I-35. Doors open at 8 p.m., and tickets are $10 presale and $12 at the door. All ages are welcome. For information or to purchase presale tickets, call 512-971-8307 or 512-416-8886. View the Facebook event here.
