[7/11] Preview: Clandestino All Stars & Money Chicha at Symphony Square

July 10, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

Money Chicha Man Chau July 11Friday, July 11, Austin-based promoter Border Sessions will host a great two band lineup that includes Austin’s first chicha band and a new band with many of those members paying tribute to one of their faves at Symphony Square. It will be a rare treat for Latin Alternative fans as the Clandestino All-Stars bring the spirit of Manu Chao to life (he’s still alive, don’t worry) by performing his classic album Clandestino in its entirety.

Clandestino All-Stars are an all-star group featuring members of Grupo Fantasma, Brownout, Master Blaster Sound System and a few other bands. They made their debut at Mohawk in May with many left wanting more.

Money Chicha are composed of members from Grupo Fantasma and Brownout. Their music pays homage to the musical and cultural movement of the ’60s and ’70s found in Peru and Colombia, incorporating the psychedelic sounds of guitars, fuzz, and reverb with heavy percussion. If you’ve never heard chicha music live, Money Chicha is a good place to start.

Jane Dunn Sibley Symphony Square, an attractive complex of four historical limestone buildings and a 350-seat amphitheater at the corner of Red River and 11th St. near the Capitol in Austin. All ages welcome. $10 cover. 8 p.m. Visit the Facebook event page here.

Manu Chao-produced Malian hip-hop group SMOD releases North American debut

July 26, 2012 By Eugenia Vela

Malian group SMOD has been active for over a decade. They’re already known in Europe for their hip-hop, mixed with blues and folk with French lyrics of political inequality and corruption. Even though they’ve released three albums since 2000, their latest self-titled full length is considered their U.S. debut.

SMOD (Nacional Records) was produced by global wonder Manu Chao, who took an interest in the project through the group’s frontman Sam Doumbia, son of musicians Amadou & Mariam. SMOD is currently out on their debut U.S. tour, looking to entrance U.S. listeners with their sound. If you’re looking for something different—with a heavy dose of Manu—make sure to watch SMOD’s video for “Ca Chante” below.
