[8/17] Preview: ALMA Women in Latin Music showcase at the Moose Lodge

almaOn Sunday, Aug. 17, the Moose Lodge will host the 5th annual Women in Latin Music showcase, presented by the Austin Latino Music Association (ALMA). The annual event will celebrate the contributions of female performers in a variety of Latin music genres and feature live performances at the eastside family-friendly venue.

This year’s lineup includes Mariachi Amor (featuring Lesly Reynaga), Tiarra Girls, Paula Maya, Los Texas Wranglers (featuring Joyce Adams, Nikki Lopez, and Rocio Valdes), La Distancia (featuring Laura Ann McGill and Irma Chavez), and special guests Erica Rangel and Erica Lazo, contestants in the Austin Tejano Music Coalition’s Tejano Idol competition.

ALMA’s mission is “to increase knowledge and awareness in the community about local musicians and important historical figures in Austin’s Latino music scene, provide exposure and resources to local musicians, and to foster the development of young musicians who will keep Latino musical styles and traditions alive in the Capitol City.” The organization presents and sponsors a variety of music events, including the “Sonidos del Barrio” series since 2001.

Long story short: A nice sampling of various Latin music styles and the ladies who make them happen. From Mariachi to conjunto to rock to Tejano and everything in between. Plus there’s always a great vibe and friendly energy at community events like this, especially at the Moose Lodge.

The Moose Lodge is located at 2103 E.M. Franklin Avenue, north of MLK and east of Airport Boulevard in East Austin. [7/22] Preview: Hillside Concert Series – Chris Castaneda Project, Devin Banda, Trampia, Los Texas Wranglers and more!

HillsideTonight, the Hillside Concert Series continues at the A.B. Cantu Pan-American Recreation Center. Always a free, family-friendly event, the series features Latino performers of all musical backgrounds at the eastside venue. This evening’s lineup includes The Chris Castaneda Project featuring The Real Patron, Devin Banda with Trampia, and Los Texas Wranglers.

Chris Castaneda is a singer-songwriter whose guitar-driven sound has been described as soulful and electric, and his Project sessions have become increasingly popular at various venues around town. Fellow Gold Man Records artist The Real Patron will be joining Castaneda’s group for his Hillside debut. Rising Tejano star Devin Banda will also be performing, along with local hip hop artist Trampia Guzman. Austin’s own award-winning Los Texas Wranglers will close out the night with their unique, laid-back blend of country and conjunto.

Long story short: Another great summer night on the Hillside – talk about a gumbo of Austin sound. Everything from Blues to Tejano to hip-hop to conjunto and country.

[10/4] Preview: Los Texas Wranglers Luau and Big Band Tejano at the Moose Lodge

wranglers_luauFriday, Oct. 4, Los Texas Wranglers will host their annual luau at the Austin Moose Lodge with special guests Big Band Tejano. The two groups will bring big brass sounds and down-home Conjunto to the east Austin dancehall for another great baile, featuring prizes for best tropical shirt, dress and couple outfits, and limbo dancers.

Earlier this year, Los Texas Wranglers celebrated the release of their newest CD, Mi Canciones, which includes original material written by bandleader Julian Limón Fernandez. They also have another CD to be released soon, featuring more originals from the prolific pen of Fernandez and even more of the Wranglers’ distinctive sound. The group, which features veteran musicians and female voices, is a hard-working conjunto with a loyal fan base that loves to dance to the group’s unique blend of country and conjunto music. Fernandez has won Austin Music Awards for Best Drummer, accordionist Mariano “Sonny” Trujillo has won in the Miscellaneous Instruments category, and the group has also won for Best Latin Traditional Band as well.

Big Band Tejano is a horn-driven band in the tradition of the great orquestas of the 1960s and 70s, and includes seasoned veteran players with impressive resumes. Fans of Alfonso Ramos y Su Orquesta, Nash Hernandez Orchestra, Augustin Ramirez, Tortilla Factory, Latin Breed, Joe Bravo, or Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution (just to name a few) will enjoy the big brass sounds of this newly-formed group.

Long story short: What more could you ask for? Conjunto, Orquesta, Limbo dancing, costume contest…it’s another great family-friendly party at the Moose.

Sunday, Sept. 22, the El Flamingo Club will welcome Los Texas Wranglers for a traditional Sunday tardeada. The popular Austin-based conjunto will bring their friendly, down-home style to the southeast Austin dancehall (also known as the Flamingo Ballroom) for an afternoon of conjunto, country, and dancing.

[10/27] Preview: Los Texas Wranglers and Nikki Lopez y Grupo Cañonazo at Austin Moose Lodge

Tonight the Austin Moose Lodge welcomes back Los Texas Wranglers and Nikki Lopez y Grupo Cañonazo for a special Halloween dance and costume contest to benefit the Johnston High School Veterans Memorial.

Led by Julian Fernandez, Los Texas Wranglers is a hard-working conjunto with a loyal fan base that loves to dance to the group’s unique blend of country and conjunto music. Fernandez has won Austin Music Awards for Best Drummer, Accordionist Mariano “Sonny” Trujillo has won in the Miscellaneous Instruments category, and the group has also won for Best Latin Traditional Band as well.

Nikki Lopez y Grupo Cañonazo is a new local band made up of veteran Tejano musicians with experience with some of the genre’s greatest groups. Bandleader Steve “Rat” Silvas is probably best known for his tenure with Little Joe y La Familia. Vocalist Nikki Lopez is a charismatic rising star with a style all her own, and even spent some time with Los Texas Wranglers before branching out into Tejano.

Johnston High School alumni and former students, along with other East Austin community members, have proposed a monument to honor to honor the 37 students who attended the school that lost their lives fighting in the Vietnam War. During that time, 75 young men from the Austin area were killed in the war in Vietnam. Then, the Tejano population of Austin was less than 10 percent, yet suffered 25 percent of the casualties and 23 percent of those casualties were from Johnston High School.

The Austin Moose Lodge is located at 2103 E.M. Franklin Avenue, east of Airport and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevards in East Austin.  The music is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. $10 cover before 9 p.m. and $15 after 9 p.m. All ages are welcome.
