[4/27] Preview: Barrio Bash Vol. III at Spider House Ballroom

April 26, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Austin Vida is proud to bring the Latin dance party to the UT campus area once again as we present the third installment of our new Barrio Bash series on Saturday, April 27, at Spider House Ballroom. Our goal is to bring together the best and most diverse Latin Alternative bands on one stage while also showcasing some of our favorite DJs. Barrios Bash Vol. III will be no different as we have another incredible lineup for you to enjoy all night.

Our featured Ballroom Stage headliner on Saturday is Cilantro Boombox. Austin’s answer to Los Amigos Invisibles, Cilantro Boombox formed when producer/bassist Felix Pacheco and Joe Willard of saxophonist Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears fame came together in 2010. Their unique brand of Afro-Latin fusion or “bilingual funk” incorporates elements of hip hop, salsa, electronica and reggae.

Austin-based Latin fusion bands Los Bandidos Cosmicos and Este Vato round out the list of performers on the  Ballroom Stage. Peligrosa member DJ Chorizo Funk and percussionist Rudy Rexx will be on the Chapel Stage outside the Ballroom from 8-10 p.m. The duo will be performing their Clásico set, their last performance until June.

Spider House Ballroom is located at 2906 Fruth Street. Doors open at 8 p.m. All ages are welcome. $7 cover for 21+. $10 for minors. Show your student I.D. at the door for reduced cover. Free parking. RSVP on Facebook here for your chance to win tickets to this year’s Pachanga Latino Music Fest.

[1/4] Preview: Austin Vida Free Week showcase at Flamingo Cantina

January 4, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Austin Vida’s Free Week showcases continue tonight at one of the most welcoming venues to Latin music in Austin, Flamingo Cantina. Once again we will be presenting four of the best bands our scene has to offer, and some of the most rudo. The best part? Well like the name “Free Week” indicates, there is no cover charge.

Tonight’s headliner is the leader in the vato rudo movement in Latin Alternative, Los Skarnales. There isn’t much more we can say about the band that hasn’t been said already. For those that don’t know, you’re missing out on Houston’s answer to bands like Maldita Vecindad, Panteón Rococó or Los Rabanes. Unlike the fore mentioned Latin rock icons, Los Skarnales adopt a little more swing and boogaloo with their brand of Latin ska. Be ready to make it a late night. Los Skarnales perform at 12:30 a.m.

Co-headlining is Austin-based Latin fusion band, Este Vato. Often compared to East L.A.’s Ozomatli, Este Vato’s music blends traditional Latin rhythms with elements of rock, reggae and hip hop. Este Vato perform at 11:15 p.m.

The early performers for tonight’s show will be the prolific electro-fusion band, Los Bandidos Cosmicos and urban Tejano collective Cinco Doce. Be ready to party early and dance all night. More details and set times available on the official Facebook event page here.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 East 6th Street. Doors open at 8:30 p.m. Music starts at 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. No cover. Visit the event post on Do512 here.
