On Friday, August 2, the Austin Latino Music Association (ALMA) plays host to the fourth annual “Women in Latin Music” showcase at Moose Lodge 1735. ALMA has produced a variety of music programs over the years, all in hope of increasing awareness of and supporting Austin’s Latino Music scene. Organized by ALMA board member Liz Lopez, the “Women in Latin Music” showcase evolved from ALMA’s 2009 “Celebrating Selena” showcase and highlights Austin-based female bands and musicians.
This year’s showcase will feature Austin-based R&B, soul and pop singer-songwriter Lauren Silva; recording artist, Leticia Rodriguez; pop singer Miranda Gil and Luz V. Zamora, a vocalist with wide variety of styles, including opera, rock, pop, Tejano, Mexican ranchera, and choral music. Among the special guests invited to perform are female contestants from around Texas that have auditioned for the 2013 Austin Tejano Music Coalition’s CANTA vocal competition, performing music from this genre that has been around for decades and is being continued by some very young artists this year.
The Moose Lodge is located at 2103 E.M. Franklin Avenue, north of MLK and east of Airport Boulevard in East Austin. Tickets are $15 at the door, $10 presale available by calling (512) 799-0815. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music begins at 7 p.m. All ages are welcome.
