[4/23] Preview: Making Movies, Migrant Kids at Lambert’s

April 21, 2015 By Ian Morales

Migrant Kids posterThursday, Apr. 23, Austin atmospheric-indie rockeros Migrant Kids will be celebrating the release of their new single at 2nd Street hotspot Lambert’s. They will be joined by fellow Austin indie band O Conqueror and Kansas City Latin Alternative favorite Making Movies.

Formed in 2011 in Detroit, Migrant Kids began their musical journey together in Michigan with cousins Miguel Ojeda and John Zakoor. They became a trio when the group moved to Austin, which is where they found the 3rd member of the group, Bryan O’Flynn (drums). The released their self-titled debut in 2013 and have been working on their follow-up album with popular Austin band Bright Light Social Hour. Migrant Kids headline at midnight.

No stranger to Austin, bilingual rockeros Making Movies are led by brothers Enrique and Diego Chi (singer/songwriter/guitarist and bassist respectively). The quintet fuses elements of American rock with traditional Latin rhythms effortlessly. They have been multiple Austin Vida showcase performers over the years and also performed at Pachanga Latino Music Festival in 2014. For their most recent release, A La Deriva, the group worked with Steve Berlin of Los Lobos. Making Movies open the show at 10 p.m.

Melodic-indie quintet O Conqueror fill the middle slot at 11 p.m. The show will serve as their single release for their new single, “Raucous Love.” Listen to the teaser below.

Lambert’s is located at 401 W 2nd St. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. 21+ welcome. Advance tickets for this event are available for purchase online here. Those who purchase advance tickets will receive downloads of the new singles from Migrant Kids and O Conqueror on the morning of Apr. 23. Advance tickets Visit the Facebook event page here.

[5/4] Preview: Cinco de Mayo pre-party at Lambert’s

May 2, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

If you are looking for quality Latin music this weekend in a more intimate setting than the big block parties and megafests, two of the best Austin-based female musicians are celebrating Cinco de Mayo weekend at Lambert’s on Saturday, May 4. Trust us, this bill will not disappoint.

Showcase opener Patricia Vonne is a longtime Austin favorite. The singer-songwriter and actress is the sibling to famous director Robert Rodriguez. While that may a point of interest of fun fact, Vonne stands on her own as a stellar performer. The bilingual Latin-roots rocker not only sings and plays guitar, but is also one of the meanest castanet players around. Vonne performs at 10 p.m.

Bilingual singer-songwriter Gina Chavez follows at 11:15 p.m. Chavez was recently voted “Best Latin Traditional” at the 2012-2013 Austin Music Awards. Currently preparing for a set at Pachanga Fest and her new album up.rooted due out this fall, Chavez is setting herself up for another career year.

Latin at Heart frontman Billy Wilson closes the show at 12:30 a.m. Lambert’s is located at 401 West 2nd Street. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. 21+ are welcome. Advance tickets are available for this show here. Tickets will be $10 at the door. Parking is available at City Hall & the AMLI building.

Concert Review: Outernational at Lambert’s

August 14, 2012 By Ian Morales

Friday night the New York City-based “future rock” group Outernational performed a headlining show at Lambert’s. Outernational is a band that sings about social issues and musically merges eclectic sounds to create their own. Think Gogol Bordello meets The Clash with a Latino twist. On tour in support of their new Tom Morello-produced EP, Future Rock, the band performed a high energy show to a small diverse crowd.

A few attendees appeared to be hardcore fans who were able to sing along word for word.  The others, mostly female to my surprise, were stereotypical Second Streeters: well-dressed and enthusiastic partiers. Despite probably not knowing who or what they were listening to, whether it was in English or Spanish, everyone stayed throughout the whole show and seemed to have had a good time.

It was great to see a group who must have known they were performing to crowd that was not familiar with them and still bring their live performance “A” game. I can’t help but wonder what this show could have been like if it were on the East Side or at a Red River venue. Lambert’s is a great venue but not a place where a band like Outernational would find an audience that would develop into hardcore fans.

New York City-based Outernational is one of those rare bands that come around once every few years that makes music that truly crosses borders and musical genres. Their sound is an eclectic mix of The Clash-style punk rock with a little Gogol Bordello swagger. Add some socially conscious lyrics and you have the self-branded “future rock” sound that is Outernational.

The band is currently on tour in support of their new release, Future Rock. The Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine, Audioslave) produced EP is the follow-up to their critically acclaimed Todos Somos Illegales.
