October 10, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

La Guerrilla
A scene from the new music video for “Compañero” from La Guerrilla.

Austin-based Latin fusion band La Guerrilla released their new music video for their single “Compañero” today. Directed by Leah Pérez, the video was shot during their live performance at the La Condessa Block Party in May. During their performance the group was wearing special Dia De Los Muertos inspired makeup and playing to a full, enthusiastic crowd. “Compañero” will be available soon from the band’s iTunes page and will be featured on the upcoming full length album, No Passport.

La Guerrilla is the musical project of Austin-based musician (by way of Peru) Enrique Rumiche. The official bio says it best when Rumiche refersthe project as “the ongoing World Troubadors Collective led by a Latino Transcontinetal Hustler.” The band’s sound is a bilingual fusion of traditional South American rhythms with elements of reggae, gypsy-punk and ska.

[7/13] Preview: Cumbia Explosion! at Flamingo Cantina

July 13, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Tonight the Flamingo Cantina is the place to be for cumbia lovers. Three of Austin’s best Latin bands, each with their own unique sound, are sure to provide those in attendance with a great Saturday night. Be ready to arrive early and stay late for what is appropriately titled “Cumbia Explosion.”

Showcase openers Manzanas Malas feature front woman Victoria Acosta of recent American Idol fame and critically acclaimed DJ Villa who plays double duty as both MC and DJ. Their music music fuses elements of cumbia, salsa, pop, hip hop and other traditional Latin rhythms. Think Black Eyed Peas with Latin sabor.

Following Manzanas Malas are Austin’s South American style gypsy-punkers La Guerrilla. The brainchild of Peruvian singer-songwriter Enrique Rumiche. Founded in 2009,their music combines punk rock with elements of ska, surf-rock and reggae with traditional Latin rhythms. Long story short, La Guerrilla is Austin’s Latino answer to Gogol Bordello. Expect ska style horns, megaphones, costume props and a couple of ballads here and there.

Closing the night’s showcase will be Austin-based urban Tejano band, Cinco Doce.  The group has made its mark in recent years with a trademark sound heavily influenced by Tejano and rock, as well as other rhythmic genres like bachata, reggaeton, and hip-hop. Their great stage show, unique sound, and hip, urban-inspired image, have gained them a loyal following, particularly among younger listeners. Recently, the group was featured on MTV Tr3s, winning “El Headliner” for September 2012.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

La Guerrilla releases new music video for “Erika”

September 4, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Katie Lesnick from La Guerrilla's "Erika" music video

Austin-based Latin fusion band La Guerrilla is the brainchild of Peruvian singer-songwriter Enrique Rumiche. With one of the most original sounds in Austin, the group incorporates elements of punk, ska and reggae with traditional Latin rhythms. Early on in their career, the band branded their music as “gypsy-punk.” Currently La Guerrilla is preparing to record their first full length record, collaborating with members of Black Joe Lewis and Grammy Award winners Grupo Fantasma.

Today La Guerrilla is celebrating the release of their first official music video for their song “Erika.” The song is a step in a different direction from the band’s early world music and punk rock en Español fusion. From their latest EP Adiós La La Land ?, “Erika” shows the more romantic side of the group. Shot on South Congress and Auditorium Shores,  La Guerrilla frontman Enrique Rumiche directed the video with C.J. Robles.
