[5/23] Preview: Cinco Doce, La Vida Buena at Sahara Lounge

May 21, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

Sahara Lounge May 23 Friday, May 23, East Austin live music venue The Sahara Lounge plays host to a great and diverse Latin music showcase from four of Austin’s best. Friday’s showcase marks the first time these four bands, headlined by salsa-fusion group La Vida Buena and Urban Tejano group Cinco Doce, have played together on one bill. Everything from hip-hop, salsa, Tejano and of course cumbia will be well represented.

La Vida Buena is arguably Austin’s hottest new Latin up-and-comer. Fronted by vocalist and KOOP Radio personality Vanessa Burden and Louie “Luison” Alarcon, La Vida Buena perform original tracks from their debut EP ¡Checkpoint Alpha! as well as salsa-fied covers of popular hip-hop and R&B tracks. La Vida Buena perform at 12:30 a.m.

Austin’s answer to Kumbia Kings, Kumbia All Starz, etc., Cinco Doce is emblematic of the young, bi-cultural Latino who loves mainstream urban music but is more than proud of their Tejano roots. They intertwine R&B, pop and hip-hop with traditional, often-synthed, cumbia beats. No cowboy hats and sparkly shirts on these guys. See Cinco Doce at 11 p.m.

Austin-based Cubana hip-hop duo Krudas Kubensi perform at 9:30 p.m while Organizacion Kumbiambera kick things off at 8 p.m.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 7 p.m. Music starts at 8 p.m. 21+ welcome. $7 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[7/4] Preview: East Side Latin Jam “Masquerade Edition” at Sahara Lounge

July 3, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Thursday, July 4, is the next installment of the East Side Latin (ESL) Jam session at The Sahara Lounge. Curated by Austin-based musician and Latino singer-songwriter Kiko Villamizar, the biweekly event is an open forum for musicians and artists to “jam” Latino estyle together and express themselves, even through poetry. No Latin-based genre is discriminated against.

After the jam session, Sahara Lounge will also feature an open mic hosted by Austin-based hip hop duo Krudas Cubensi. MCs Odaymara Cuesta (Pasa Kruda) and Olivia Kruda Prendes will open up the mic to attendees to rhyme with the duo or “spit that spoken word” with them.

Also for Friday’s event, attendees of the open mic and jam session are encouraged to dress in masquerade costume accessories.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 9 p.m. $5 cover. 21+ welcome. The $5 cover helps organizers sustain the jam session while covering the cost of a buffet that includes a vegan version of the Colombian food Villamizar cooks up himself. Visit the official Facebook event page here.

[8/31] Preview: Huerta Culture & Krudas Cubensi at Sahara Lounge

August 30, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Formerly TC’s Lounge, The Sahara Lounge will play host to a great night of local Latin music on Friday, August 31. Two of Austin’s most socially conscious Latin bands will take the stage to not only make you dance, but also provide a positive message. In addition to the live music offerings, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy food from The Smokehouse BBQ trailer on the back patio.

Austin-based Huerta Culture opens the showcase. The group mixes a variety of sounds from Latino rhythms such as Cuban son, salsa, Colombian cumbia and regga- fusion. The group refers to their sound as “psichocumbia reggaeska.” We think that pretty much sums it up. Huerta Culture perform at 10:30 p.m.

Austin-based hip hop duo Krudas Cubensi headline as the show serves as a homecoming show of sorts. The group have recently been on the road performing in support of their latest release, Levantate. Composed of Olivia Prendes and Odaymara Cuesta (Pasa Kruda), the Cuban born rap artists have been bringing Latina revolution style hip hop to the world since 1997.  Krudas Cubensi perform at midnight.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Free parking. Visit the event page on Facebook here and on Do512 here.
