[5/15] Preview: Peligrosa ft. Murlo at Empire Control Room & Garage

May 13, 2015 By Ian Morales

Peligrosa FBFriday, May 15, marks the third Friday of the month and that means it is time for Austin-based Latin DJ collective Peligrosa to take over Empire Control Room & Garage. Austin’s longest running Latin dance party will welcome special guest Murlo to the party as the London-based producer is currently on his first North American tour. While the DJs own the patio, live music will be provided on the Control Room stage inside by Austin-based performers Leticia Rodriguez and Huerta Culture. Puro party y’all.

Although not Latino, Murlo will be an easy fit with the Latin sounds of Peligrosa. His mixes are heavily Caribbean-influenced, remixing grime, dancehall, R&B and more on UK dance floors. His latest release, Jasmine EP, was released in February via Mixpak. The EP features his first, full original vocal release, Irish vocalist Gemma Dunleavy. Be ready to dance to a little Jasmine material as well as some electronic riddims.

Peligrosa crew members who will be in the house Friday include Orion, Manolo Black, DJ Manny, El Dusty and Chorizo Funk. Peligrosa photographer Quito will be taking photos.

Empire Control Room & Garage is located at 606 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 10 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 Pre-sale Ticket (GA) available here / $8 Day Of Show. Visit the Facebook event page here. In the event of rain, the full show will be moved inside to the Control Room stage.

[1/31] Preview: “Cumbiamba” at Flamingo Cantina

January 31, 2015 By Austin Vida Staff

Cumbiamba Jan 31Once again tonight the place to be for cumbia lovers in Austin is 6th street live music venue Flamingo Cantina. Three of Austin’s best Latin bands are coming together for night dedicated to celebrating the popular Colombian-based genre with a live music showcase aptly titled “Cumbiamba.” Long story short, cumbia and more cumbia all night long.

Austin’s La Frenetika offers an array of covers and original music that fuses elements of Colombian style cumbia, vallenato, gozadera and other traditional Latin rhythms. Expect lots of dancing, great crowd of regulars and big sound.

El Tule is a longtime staple in the Latin music community in Austin. Their lyrics are about history, art and culture often focus on legends and tales of the mystical. Their music blends elements of salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggae set to Spanish lyrics.

Huerta Culture takes its name from Huerta Street in South Austin where for years a core group of friends got together to jam and lay down rhythms, sometimes hosting after parties for local and traveling musicians. Their music blends elements of reggae, ska, traditional Latin rhythms such as cumbia and combines them with socially conscious lyrics.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $7 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[11/3] Preview: Huerta Culture,Son Armado & Gustavo Rodriguez at Flamingo Cantina

November 2, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Saturday, November 3, is being dubbed “World Music Night” at Flamingo Cantina. After looking at the lineup, there is cultural music inspired by two different continents and at least two different countries. Either way, the lineup consists of three of Austin’s best.

Austin-based Son Jarocho extraordinaires Son Armado open the showcase at 9:15 p.m. Son Jarocho is a popular education-based art form centered around community gatherings & celebrations known as Fandangos. The Fandango involves music, dancing, and poetry in the context of a communally created and shared space, with the tarima (a wooden dance platform) as the gathering point. Son Armado are emblematic of the movement right here in Austin.

Huerta Culture follows with their personal brand of South American-base Latin fusion. The band takes its name from Huerta Street in South Austin where for years a core group of friends got together to jam and lay down rhythms, sometimes hosting after parties for local and traveling musicians. Their music blends elements of reggae, ska, traditional Latin rhythms such as cumbia and combines them with socially conscious lyrics. Huerta Culture take the stage at 10:30 p.m.

Gustavo Rodriguez headlines Saturday night’s showcase. Over the past 20 years in Austin, 7 years with Los Locos, Rodriguez  has performed at many local venues and restaurants. Rodriguez has experience in performing a wide variety of genres such as cumbia, tropical, vallenato and ranchera. The Gustavo Rodriguez band perform at midnight.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 East 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. Cover charge is $6. Visit the event post on Facebook here.

[8/31] Preview: Huerta Culture & Krudas Cubensi at Sahara Lounge

August 30, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Formerly TC’s Lounge, The Sahara Lounge will play host to a great night of local Latin music on Friday, August 31. Two of Austin’s most socially conscious Latin bands will take the stage to not only make you dance, but also provide a positive message. In addition to the live music offerings, attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy food from The Smokehouse BBQ trailer on the back patio.

Austin-based Huerta Culture opens the showcase. The group mixes a variety of sounds from Latino rhythms such as Cuban son, salsa, Colombian cumbia and regga- fusion. The group refers to their sound as “psichocumbia reggaeska.” We think that pretty much sums it up. Huerta Culture perform at 10:30 p.m.

Austin-based hip hop duo Krudas Cubensi headline as the show serves as a homecoming show of sorts. The group have recently been on the road performing in support of their latest release, Levantate. Composed of Olivia Prendes and Odaymara Cuesta (Pasa Kruda), the Cuban born rap artists have been bringing Latina revolution style hip hop to the world since 1997.  Krudas Cubensi perform at midnight.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 9:30 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Free parking. Visit the event page on Facebook here and on Do512 here.
