May 13, 2015 By Ian Morales

Pachanga after posterSaturday, May 16, is the big day for Latin Alternative fans as the Pachanga Latino Music Festival goes down at Fiesta Gardens. In true festival, or “pachanga estyle,” the organizers commissioned Red Bull Music Academy to present the official after party at sister venues Hotel Vegas and The Volstead Lounge. The event (free to wristband holders) features multiple noteworthy Latin Alternative acts including Latin Grammy® Nominated producer and re-mixer Mr. Pauer.

Hotel Vegas will feature live band performances before Mr. Pauer including the urban cumbia sounds of Texas’ own Master Blaster Sound System and El Dusty with Mexican rapper MLKMN.

The Volstead Lounge, or the neighboring venue or room next door to Hotel Vegas, will feature DJs Orión from Peligrosa and Gracie Chavez from Houston’s Bombón crew.

Long story short: Puro party after the party that’s well worth the price of admission. Lots of heepsters and homies.

Hotel Vegas and The Volstead are located at 1500 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 10 p.m. 21+ welcome. Entry is free with Pachanga Fest wristband. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[5/23] Preview: El Tule vs. DJ Orión at Hotel Vegas

May 21, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

El Tule Orion May 23Memorial Day weekend gets a proper kickoff Latino estyle this Friday at East Austin hotspot, Hotel Vegas. If the lineup in the poster to the left looks familiar, you’re not experiencing deja vu. Two of Austin’s favorites in our local Latin Alternative scene, El Tule and DJ Orión, take over the venue for a party they have branded “La Revancha.”

DJ Orión is the leader and founding member of popular Austin-based Latin DJ collective Peligrosa. A jack of all trades, Orión Garcia seems to do it all. He holds down a Saturday residency at The Volstead, handles all things business for Peligrosa and even provides visuals for live music events and parties that aren’t his. Best of all, he throws down the best of electro-cumbia, dembow, moombahton, hip-hop, salsa and more.

Latin fusion band EL Tule is a staple in the Latin music community in Austin. Their lyrics are about history, art and culture often focus on legends and tales of the mystical. Their music blends elements of salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggae set to Spanish lyrics. El Tule are currently performing in support of their latest release, Volumen III.

Hotel Vegas is located at 1500 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. Music at 10 p.m. 21+ welcome. $7 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

November 26, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

OrionTwo of Austin’s most popular veteran DJs sit down at Hotel Vegas for a Blastro2/Austin Vida video shoot to discuss some of their favorite records. What was supposed to be a video shoot with a touring artist where DJ Mel and DJ Orión talk records with them, ended up giving birth to a new video series titled “Crate Digging Roots.” Watch the two vinyl junkies discuss two of their faves. Learn more about the DJs below.

DJ Mel

If you have ever been Nasty’s on Monday for hip-hop night or to popular ’80s dance party Rock The Casbah, then you’ve danced to DJ Mel. The longtime Austin staple has performed for big events at Lollapalooza and opened for multiple urban market concerts at Stubb’s. Like many of us, he too is a longtime Morrissey lover.

DJ Orión

DJ Orión is the leader and a founding member of the Austin-based Latin DJ collective, Peligrosa. He is the resident DJ every Saturday at The Volstead Lounge and one of the world’s leading purveyors of the Latin electronic movement. Hotel Vegas and The Volstead Lounge hosted a special Red Bull Panamérika event in September that featured Nacional Records recording artist Mexican Institute of Sound (MIS). The concert was part of the four city “Wazzap Tour” in which MIS performed with a full band and Los Master Plus co-headlined each tour date.  It was one of the hottest Latin Alternative parties of the year.

Before the concert began our own Editor-in-Chief Ian Morales teamed up with Austin-based video company Blastro2 to produce the following video interview with Camilo Lara himself, the mastermind behind MIS. Watch the video to learn more about MIS’ latest album Politico and what Lara thinks about the new electro-cumbia movement coming out of Mexico.

[9/6] Preview: Red Bull Panamérika presents “Wazzap Tour” at Hotel Vegas and The Volstead Lounge

September 6, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Tonight Hotel Vegas and The Volstead Lounge will host a special Red Bull Panamérika event featuring Nacional Records artist Mexican Institute of Sound (MIS) and Guadalajara-based DJ duo Los Master Plus. The concert is part of the four city mini “Wazzap Tour” that kicked off last night in Dallas and stops in Austin, Houston, New Orleans.

MIS is the music moniker of Camilo Lara, who was once head of A&R and then president of EMI Music Mexico. The Nacional Records recording artist is one of the leaders of the new era of Mexican sonidos which include fusing early-20th-century corridos with electronica. No stranger to Austin, Wazzup Tour headliner MIS was the Pachanga Fest headliner in 2009 and has even performed at Southwestern University’s Cluster Fest in 2011. MIS is scheduled to perform tonight at 11 p.m.

Co-headliners Los Master Plus are composed of DJs El Comanche and Larry Mon. They are part of the new wave of the cumbiatrónica movement coming from Mexico. Austin got their first look at the duo and their epic bigotes at this year’s Pachanga Latino Music Fest in May. The group turned heads at Pachanga with the same Spanish language Kings of Leon cover, “Sex En Fuego,” that helped them become a YouTube viral sensation. Los Master Plus are scheduled to perform at 9:45 p.m.

After the Wazzup Tour headliners are done, some of the fellas from Austin-based Latin DJ crew Peligrosa will keep the party going inside Volstead Lounge. The Hotel Vegas stage will feature late performances from Austin-based Selena tribute band, Selena y Los Burritos, and Hidden Ritual performing in Spanish.

Hotel Vegas is located at 1500 E. 6th Street. DJs from Peligrosa will kick off the party when doors open at 8 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Early arrival is suggested as this event is expected to be at capacity early. No advance tickets are available to purchase online.
