[3/29] Preview: La Tropa F and Grupo Maldad at the Moose Lodge

March 28, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

La Tropa FSaturday night, Mar. 29, La Tropa F and Grupo Maldad take over the Moose Lodge. Both groups are deeply rooted in conjunto, which is perfect for the eastside family dancehall.

La Tropa F began as a family conjunto way back when as Los Hermanos Farias, with David Farias on accordion. After changing the name, La Tropa F went on to great success during the 1990s and was at the top of the Tejano charts along with other acts like David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, Ram Herrera, and Selena. After scoring with hits like “Juan Sabor” and “Tocando Puertas,” the group later broke up, with David moving on to Los Texmaniacs with Max Baca, and ultimately re-forming Los Hermanos Farias with brothers Joe and Juan. The current lineup is led by Jesse Farias, and their newest album, Reedifica Su Musica, is now available on Freddie Records.

Formed in 2006, Grupo Maldad features the second generation of one of Tejano and Conjunto music’s most legendary, respected and beloved bands, Los Aguilares, along with seasoned veterans from Grupo Rodeo and other groups. The band has a strong, accordion-based sound rooted firmly in conjunto, courtesy of accordion player (and former student of the legendary Valerio Longoria) J.R. Ramos. Their albums Tradicion Humilde and Segundo Capitulo, have featured original songs as well as fantastic reinterpretations of popular standards.

Long story short: Has the makings of one hell of a show, especially if you like a strong conjunto heartbeat in your Tejano.

The Moose Lodge is located at 2103 E.M. Franklin Avenue, north of MLK and east of Airport Boulevard in East Austin. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the cover is $10 before 9 p.m., and $12 after 9 p.m. All ages are welcome.  For more information, contact the Moose Lodge at 512-926-0043.

[9/7] Preview: Grupo Maldad with Juan P. Moreno at Texas Club Bar and Grill

September 6, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

Saturday Sept. 7, Texas Club Bar and Grill continues bringing more variety to the Austin area with Grupo Maldad and special guest Juan P. Moreno. The talented rising stars from San Antonio are riding high with Tejano Music Award nominations and growing fan base, while Beeville-based bajo sexto master Moreno has enjoyed solo success fronting his own band and notable cameos like this all around the state.

Juan P. Moreno is one of the best bajo sexto players ever to pick up the instrument, at once able to compliment the bass line and embellish the melody like few others can. The multi-talented musician spent quite a few years with Jaime y Los Chamacos and also some time with David Lee Garza y Los Musicales before embarking on a successful solo career.

Long story short: Another great night in southeast Austin with a solid lineup of skilled musicians at the top of their game. Kudos again to Texas Club Bar and Grill for reaching beyond the regular rotation to the seemingly endless pool of great Tejano talent, most of whom are dying to play in the Live Music Capital of the World.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The show starts at 9 p.m., tickets are $8 before 9 p.m., 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621. Visit the Facebook event page here.
