Austin Ticket Giveaway: Brownout presents Brown Sabbath at ACL Live

January 28, 2015 By Austin Vida Staff

Brown Sabbath is the alter ego of Austin-based psych-funk collective Brownout who delve deep into reinterpreting the catalog of metal godfathers, Black Sabbath.  The full-length album, Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, features special appearances from The Black Angels’ Alex Maas and primary vocals from Alex Marrero. Brown Sabbath remains true to the darkness, bombast and fuzz of Sabbath’s sound, while re-imagining the music with greasy Afro-Latin horns, hypnotic percussion and psyched-out, rare-groove improv.

On Friday, Feb. 27, Brownout will be performing as Brown Sabbath in Austin at ACL Live. The best part? We have two tickets to giveaway to one of our lucky Austin Vida readers.

The giveaway will be conducted as a raffle from our email list. Just click “enter the drawing” below after submitting your full name and email address. Only submissions with full names will be officially entered. We will pick the winner from these submissions before 6 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, the day before the show. The winner will be notified via email from Austin Vida.

ACL Live is located at 310 Willie Nelson Blvd. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Show at 8 p.m. all ages are welcome. Advance tickets for this event are available for purchase online here.

Nacional Records announces debut release from Jungle Fire

July 28, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

TropicosoNorth Hollywood-based Latin Alternative label Nacional Records announced this week that they will release Tropicoso from Jungle Fire. Set for a Sept. 30 release, Tropicoso will be the debut full-length album from the Los Angeles-based Afro-Latin funk band. If you are fan of Austin-based funksters Brownout, Cilantro Boombox or Hard Proof Afrobeat, then you will love Jungle Fire.

Jungle Fire originally began as a one-off project in 2011. Their music combines elements of cumbia, Afrobeat and traditional old-school funk and rock. In 2011, Ohio-based label Colemine Records released the group’s first 7” single “Comencemos” (a cover of Fela Kuti’s “Let’s Start”). Shortly after that sold out, Jungle Fire released a second 7” via Colemine for their single “Firewalker.”

Brownout takes over Frank every Thursday in September

September 5, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Thursday nights just got waaayyyyy funkier this month at Frank. The popular purveyor of the artisan sausage, which regularly features live music to go with those fancy hot dogs, will host Austin-based two sets from Austin-based funksters Brownout live every Thursday night in September. Con El Brownout No Se Juega!

As if two sets of the funk each Thursday night was not enough, Brownout is performing with different special guest DJs and collaborators each Thursday night. Starting with a hip-hop theme tonight, local hip-hop faves DJ Chicken George (peddling jazztronica), Riders Against The Storm and Bavu Blakes join band for some special performances.

Tonight’s lone out of town guest, Will Holland, comes all the way from Colombia by way of England. Better known by his DJ moniker Quantic, Holland spins some of the best electronic cumbias, salsa, bossa nova, soul, funk and jazz. Many of you will remember his track “Mi Swing Es Tropical” with Nickodemus from the Apple commercial.

Frank is located at 407 Colorado St. Doors open at 9 p.m. with the DJs and music starts at 10:30 p.m. $10 cover. All ages are welcome. Check back with Austin Vida each week for previews of each night’s showcase or visit the event page on Facebook here for details.
