[6/13] Preview: Los Texmaniacs and Son de Rey at Flamingo Cantina

June 12, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

TexmaniacsSaturday June 13, San Antonio’s Max Baca and Los Texmaniacs are bringing conjunto back to Flamingo Cantina, along with local Tejano-pop fusionists Son de Rey. These days, it’s pretty rare for any Tejano or conjunto artist to play in the heart of 6th street in Austin, so when Max and the guys return to the stage, the audience will get an earful of their unique brand of this homegrown accordion-driven Texas music.

Founded by bajo sexto master Max Baca, Los Texmaniacs are known for playing hardcore conjunto, while adding a little something from other genres as well. Their albums with Smithsonian Folkways have not only been extraordinarily successful, but have also helped illuminate conjunto’s place on the map of uniquely American roots music. Borders and Bailes, an album full of traditional conjunto favorites, took home the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album. Since joining the group last year, Josh Baca has done a fantastic job taking over squeezebox duties from accordion wizard David Farias, showing a style heavily influenced by Flaco Jimenez. The group’s latest album, Americano Groove, is produced by Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin and is available now.

Show openers Son De Rey will get the energy going early in front of a crowd they might not get to play in front of on a regular basis. Fronted by the dynamic and always energetic Luis Miguel Ramírez, the group performs original music from their album, Ojos Azules, while also performing covers ranging from English language dance tracks to familiar Tejano hits.

Long story short: Regular 6th street goers would (should?) dig the variety and vibe coming out of the Flamingo Cantina on Saturday night. This intimate Austin show, a hallmark of the Texmaniacs’ Americano Groove tour, is a great introduction to conjunto. It’s also a prelude to next week’s all-star Austin City Limits Hall of Fame show where Flaco will be one of the first inductees and perform, backed up by Los Texmaniacs.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. $5 cover. 21+ are welcome.

[4/16] Preview: Las Cafeteras, La Frenetika at Flamingo Cantina

April 16, 2015 By Austin Vida Staff

Las cafeteras posterTonight popular 6th Street live music venue Flamingo Cantina hosts the Austin tour stop for East Los Angeles’ alt-roots band Las Cafeteras. Local support comes from the South American-inspired La Frenetika. Between the two, there is every reason to go in late tomorrow or make it an early weekend.

Las Cafeteras come to Austin on tour in support of their newly released remix and music video for their single “Mujer Soy.” According to the band, the project was a special collaboration with Los Angeles DJ crew La Junta Sound System who remixed some of their previous recordings into upbeat dance tracks. Their live set is brought to life by the eclectic instrumentation used, which include jarana’s, requinto, a donkey jawbone, a West African bass instrument called the Marimbol, cajón, and a wooden platform called the Tarima used to dance Zapateado.

Local favorites La Frenetika offer an array of covers and original music that fuses elements of Colombian style cumbia, vallenato, gozadera and other traditional Latin rhythms. Expect lots of dancing, great crowd of regulars and big sound.

Austin’s DJ Chorizo Funk (Peligrosa, Body Rock) spins before and in-between sets.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $10 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[1/24] Preview: ¡Revolución! Dance Party! at Flamingo Cantina

January 24, 2015 By Ian Morales

Los Federales Jan 24Tonight marks the second night of this sort of unofficial Latin music weekend for popular 6th street venue Flamingo Cantina. While last night’s show leaned towards more traditional (mostly) Spanish language music, tonight’s showcase takes it up a notch by going reggae-ska. Remember, this is how Flamingo Cantina made its name after all.

The show kicks off with a non-Latino opener in Benny Versus The Best. The Austin-based ska band is a veteran in the scene that formed in 2008. They released their debut self-titled album in 2011 before taking a brief hiatus, returning to action in 2013. The band is currently working on their second album which is scheduled for release late this year. Benny Versus The Beast performs at 9:30 p.m.

Austin-based reggae/ska band Los Kurados perform at the 11 p.m. slot. The high energy ska band sing in Spanish but can be enjoyed by all. Expect popular covers from Los Fabulosos Cadillacs along with original music. Los Kurados perform at 11 p.m.

Closing the night’s showcase are Austin-based group Los Federales. Formerly known as Ex-Machina, the group is fronted Mexican national Blas Moreno. The group describes their music as “a dynamic blend of upbeat reggae and Afro-Cuban rhythms with prog-rock and punk sensibilities.” Throw in a little psychedelic touch with bilingual lyrics and that pretty much sums up their sound. See Los Federales perform at 12:30.

The Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[9/11] Preview: Matuto at Flamingo Cantina

September 11, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

MatutoThursday, Sept. 11, New York City-based Matuto will be performing a headlining concert at Flamingo Cantina. The night’s theme seems to be Brazilian-inspired all around as locals Seu Jacinto and DJ Canoso, aka Michael Crocket of KUTX 98.9, join the party. It makes us wish we knew how to say “awesome” in Portuguese.

Matuto classifies themselves as a “Brazilian Bluegrass” band. Their music stems from an honest love for roots music, genuine Brazilian styles, and improvisational experimentation. Clay Ross and Rob Curto officially started the band in 2009 when they played the massive REC BEAT festival on the Sunday of Brazilian Carnival in Recife. They have since performed internationally at clubs and festivals all over the country. They are touring in support of The Devil and the Diamond, released in May of 2013 via Motema Music.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. $10 cover. 21+ are welcome. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[8/14] Preview: Radio La Chusma at Flamingo Cantina

August 14, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

Radio La ChusmaTonight the Chuco Town reggae band Radio La Chusma is in town for a concert at Flamingo Cantina on 6th. They will be part of a reggae bill that includes Dub South Records recording artist Sol Tribe from San Antonio and ska/punk band Young Costello from Austin. It is a great reason to get your weekend started early or to just double the coffee tomorrow at work.

Self described as a cumbia-reggae-rock band, Radio La Chusma exemplifies the border vibe that only a border city band could pull off in a reggae band. The group even adds four part harmonies and violin solos. While they are certainly not the first band to fuse reggae with Latin rhythms, Radio La Chusma do it well.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. $7 cover at the door. 21+ welcome. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[8/9] Preview: Son De Rey, El Tule, Los Nahuatlatos at Flamingo Cantina

August 7, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

AV Aug 9 FacebookSaturday, Aug. 9, Austin Vida is presenting their next Latin music showcase at our ole’ 6th Street stompin’ ground, Flamingo Cantina. We’ve got a three band bill that is the perfect soundtrack for your Saturday night. Two of Austin’s favorites will perform with one of our favorites from San Antonio. There will be zero reason to stay home and every reason to dance.

Opening the showcase are San Antonio-based Los Nahuatlatos. The group began a few years back as a band called Xemilla with current members vocalist/drummer Joaquin Abrego, guitarists Pablo Mancias and Cuauhtli Reyna, and bassist Carlos Mancias. They then joined up with rapper Itzli Ramirez, accordionist Nicolas Valdez and trombonist Daniel Klein to form Los Nahuatlatos. Their music fuses different styles of Latino music (including but not limited to- conjunto, Son Jarocho, Latin Jazz and R&B) and incorporates them with elements of hip-hop, ska, reggae and soul. While some members have changed, the same sound remains.

Austin’s El Tule have the night’s second slot following Los Nahuatlatos. The group is a longtime staple in the Latin music community in Austin. Their lyrics are about history, art and culture often focus on legends and tales of the mystical. Their music blends elements of salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggae set to Spanish lyrics. El Tule are currently performing in support of their latest release, Volumen III.

Closing the night is Austin’s Son De Rey. The Latin music quartet’s music combines elements of pop, salsa, Tejano, cumbia and R&B. In addition to their original music, the group is known to perform covers of popular Top 40 hits with their own Latin twist, including “Careless Whisper” by George Michael (Wham!). In 2012, Son De Rey released their debut EP, Ojos Azules. The group most recently put out their new English language pop single, “Pray For A Lover,” in July.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. Visit the Facebook event page here.
