[8/18] Preview: Los Texmaniacs with Flaco Jimenez at Antone’s

August 17, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

Sunday, Aug. 18, Conjunto continues at Antone’s with the third installment of Max Baca and the Texmaniacs‘ Sunday residency, presented by Texas Folklife. The high-powered San Antonio group will be joined by the one and only Flaco Jimenez.

Los Texmaniacs, founded by bajo sexto master Max Baca, are known for playing hardcore Conjunto, but also adding a little something from other genres as well. Their albums with Smithsonian Folkways have not only been extraordinarily successful, but have also helped add Conjunto to the map of uniquely American roots music. Borders and Bailes, an album full of traditional Conjunto favorites, took home the 2009 Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album.

Flaco Jimenez is a Grammy Award-winning Texas music legend. Growing up playing the traditional Conjunto of his father, Don Santiago Jimenez Sr., Flaco branched out with fellow San Antonio native Doug Sahm in the early ’70s, adding his accordion to Sahm’s gumbo of R&B, Blues, Rock, and Country to create a truly unique Tex-Mex sound. He continued working with Sahm and Augie Meyers and ultimately formed the Texas Tornados in the 90s. Flaco has also collaborated with the Rolling Stones, The Mavericks, Buck Owens and Dwight Yoakam, and a whole host of non-Conjunto artists, leading many to describe him as an ambassador of South Texas Conjunto.

Texas Folklife is a statewide non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and presenting the diverse cultures and living heritage of the Lone Star State. Every year, they present the Big Squeeze Accordion Contest, with young accordionists from various genres and from all parts of Texas competing for the top prize.

Long story short: A Texas music legend playing at a legendary Austin music venue, backed by a world-class band. What more could you ask for?

Antone’s is located at 2015 E. Riverside, just south of Riverside off of Burton Drive. Doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5 presale (available online), or $8 at the door. All ages are welcome. Follow the Facebook event here.
