[5/22] Preview: Elida y Avante and Solido at Tejano Ranch

May 22, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Elida posterTonight will be the last Friday night at Tejano Ranch (more on that in a few). Tejano superstar Elida Reyna y Avante will bring her “A” game (as she always does), as will the super-popular Texas Norteño, Sólido.

About the groups…

In the past few years, Reyna has dominated Tejano music, consistently taking home honors at the Tejano Music Awards (including Female Vocalist of the Year every year since 2007!), as well as the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album in 2010. Her solo success, as well as her recent duets with another super-hot performer, Jesse Turner of Siggno, have firmly solidified her Tejano superstar status. Although undeniably gorgeous, she has written many of her own songs and has the chops to do any genre she chooses with her strong voice that is never shrill or grating.

Often categorized with other groups like Duelo, Siggno, and Intocable, all of whom play a style that some call “Texas Norteño,” the Rio Grande City-based Sólido borrows from both Tejano and Norteño, which are related genres, but still quite different. Sólido describes their sound as “romantic and melodic, ideal for dancing and singing,” and has remained popular and productive since the group’s nearly overnight rise to fame after signing with Freddie Records in the early 2000s. Their discography includes the albums Hasta La Cima Del Cielo, Nadie Como Tu (which won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album), Por Ti, Vuelve, En Vivo Contigo, Nuestro Amor, Cuidado, Que Importa, Te Va A Doler, and their latest album, Sentimientos. The group 2014 Tejano Music Award for Best Norteño Group.

Long story short: Super solid doubleheader from two of the genre’s most successful groups…a good blend of rancheras and cumbias, cowboy hats and mini-skirts.

Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $15 all night long. 18+ are welcome. Visit the event page on Facebook here.

A special note about the club and what its closing means:

Tejano Ranch has been a mainstay for Tejano fans for decades. The official announcement on their Facebook page says that the company already has plans for another location in Austin. But in the meantime, Austin has lost its only reliably Tejano club. And that’s kind of a big deal in a city known as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Other venues only have it every so often. Fans could reasonably expect live Tejano music every Friday night, but not anymore. Here’s to hoping another venue picks up the opportunity, soon.
