California-based Latin alternative duo Raul Y Mexia are on this year’s Pachanga Latino Music Fest lineup, but they also recently released their debut album Arriba Y Lejos through Nacional Records. The sound of this album is thanks to Grammy-nominated producer Antonio “Toy” Hernandez, better known as Toy Selectah, who steered the mashed-up pop, rap, Mexican- Latin dance sounds and produced the majority of songs in this 10-track album. The duo is currently offering a free download of their single “Solo Para Ti” on Facebook.

Raul Y Mexia –sons of Hernan Hernandez of the legendary Los Tigres del Norte- is a pop duo that creates a unique sound around hip hop, cumbia, Latin ballads and electronic dance music. They were signed to Latin Alternative label Nacional Records last year. In 2010, they jumped into the spotlight with their single “Todos Somos Arizona,” which talks about the immigration conflict in the U.S. Today, the music video for their debut single “Las Escondidas” is on heavy rotation at MTV Tr3s after debuting on Univision’s Primer Impacto last month.

Empresarios release new remix for “La Secretaria”

February 12, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Washington D.C.-based Tropicaliente group Empresarios releases new track “Secretaria (Empresarios Dubplate Especial).” This new track is a remix of classic hit “La Secretaria,” originally made popular by Salvadorian cumbia ensemble Los Hermanos Flores almost 30 years ago. With this new remix, the Empresarios hope to turn this traditional cumbia into a more modern version to introduce to new listeners and drag their attention to the original hit.

Empresarios signature dance-party sound with loud horns and percussion is the result of mixing some classic Latin grooves. Their title of “Kings of Tropicaliente” – a Caribbean music style- comes from each one of the band members combining salsa, dub, cumbia, house and reggae to form their very unique style. Their most recent album El Sonido Mágico was released in November of last year. This album features songs “Salsa de Gala,” “Volume” and “7th Street Groove,” among others. As always, you can be sure the Empresarios will make you want to stand up and dance.

You can listen to the Empresarios new remix “La Secretaria (Empresarios Dubplate Especial)” below and download here.

Download: “Olé” by Cupéro

January 25, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

New York- based singer-songwriter Cupéro (promo photo by Steven Halin)

New York-based pop-rock artist Clarissa Cupero released “Olé,” her newest single from her third EP, released on Jan. 22. “Olé” –a common expression used in Spain- was inspired by her experiences while living in Spain and highly influenced by Flamenco music and the Spanish culture. Cupéro performed “Olé” and other Spanish and English songs at a local Flamenco bar in Sevilla, where she managed to gather bilingual crowds.

Although Cupéro is a non-Latino, she believes in promoting cross-cultural understanding between the Latin and American music demographics. Both her passion for Spanish and admiration of the Latino-culture have led her to become one of the few artists to successfully crossover from English to Spanish, using as her biggest influence the 17-times Latin Grammy-winner, Juanes. She first started singing when she was only four-years-old, then learned to play the piano at the age of nine and the guitar at the age of sixteen. Since then, Cupéro has been a two-time finalist in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for her songs “Voces,” which talks about the social and governmental struggles within Latin American societies, and “Las Sombras,” which also made the first round Grammy ballot for Record of the Year in 2011.

Brooklyn-based artist Zuzuka Poderosa releases “Psicodelia”, the newest single from her debut EP Carioca Bass. “Psicodelia,” remixed by Nego Moçambique, also known as Marcelo Martins, features Zuzuka’s signature post-modern baile funk – a style born in the slums of Brazil – that will make you get up and dance to the catchy beats. Along with “Psicodelia,” Carioca Bass will feature the single “Seda,” produced by DJ Kush Arora, and other six remixes by Nego Mozambique, Jubilee & Burt Fox, Sonora, and Chrissy Murderbot among others. Carioca Bass will be released in January 2013 through Little Owl Records.

Born and raised in Brazil, the half-Indonesian artist Zuzuka Poderosa moved to NYC to study jazz vocal improvisation. She is now known for bringing baile funk – which she calls ‘Carioca Bass’ – from the underground scene to the streets of Brooklyn and to many other stages around the world. Her carioca bass style has often been compared to M.I.A., who brought the sound to the mainstream with her song “Bucky Done Gun” in 2005. This year, Zuzuka performed at several showcases during South By Southwest, including a performance at our own Austin Vida party.
