[8/15] Preview: Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz at Desperados in Kyle

August 15, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Jimmy GonzalezTonight, the legendary Jimmy Gonzalez y Grupo Mazz return to Desperados in Kyle. The Brownsville native and bonafide Tejano superstar is considered one of the best arrangers and songwriters in Tejano music and, after beginning his career well over thirty years ago, he is still going strong and cranking out hit after hit.

The story of Mazz is nothing short of amazing and is the stuff of movies. Jimmy Gonzalez has seen it all: countless hits, Grammy Awards, Tejano Music Awards, a famously flawed former frontman in Joe Lopez, a famous rivalry with fellow Tejano powerhouse La Mafia, highs and lows, and finally a resurrection with Gonzalez himself as the voice and face of Mazz. Through it all, Gonzalez has consistently written great songs and has continued to be one of the most popular, bankable and reliable acts in Tejano music.

Jimmy’s latest release, Iconic, is now available everywhere, and is yet another solid effort and most definitely “puro Mazz.”

Long story short: Lots of fans, classics and new hits, and well worth the cover charge to see one of the greats. It’s also a birthday party for the man himself, Jimmy Gonzalez and Desperados’ own Eddie Chabarria too! What more could you ask for?

Desperados is located at 110 W. Center Street, just west of I-35 in Kyle. The doors open at 8 p.m.The cover charge is $15 all night long. 21+ are welcome. For more information, message Desperados on Facebook.

The band struck gold with the single “Borracho de Besos” in 1989, a song that remains a favorite at Tejano clubs and events everywhere. Award-winning Tejano superstar Marcos Orozco, along with his top-notch backing band, Grupo Rebelde, will bring their special brand of romantic cumbias, rancheras and more to the the new club, which continues to bring some of the biggest acts in Tejano music.

The multi-talented singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and musician began his career in the 1980s with groups Blackjack, Powerhouse, and the legendary Fabulosos 4, but it was his time as the lead singer for David Lee Garza y Los Musicales that propelled him to Tejano music mega popularity. His unmistakable voice is on the megahits ”Tonta,” “Una Noche Mas,” “Tu Boca Roja,” and more, which are still on heavy rotation at Tejano music stations and on DJ playlists everywhere.

[5/22] Preview: Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers at Desperados in Kyle

May 22, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Ricky NaranjoTonight, it’s chanclaso time at Desperados in Kyle with Ricky Naranjo y Los Gamblers. The conjunto powerhouse from Alice, Texas will without a doubt pack the dance floor at the new club, which continues to bring some of the biggest acts in Tejano music.

Ricky’s father, Ruben Naranjo, was and continues to be one of the most beloved performers in conjunto history. His simple but elegant accordion style, coupled with great vocal harmonies and foot-stomping, pull-you-out-of-your-damn-seat rhythm section (Los Gamblers) has been the soundtrack for many a Friday and Saturday night in South Texas and beyond. Ricky spent a number of years playing drums for his dad and, after Ruben’s death in 1998, continued on as bandleader of the Gamblers, faithful to the family legacy and traditional sound featuring Ruben Naranjo III on accordion and Javier and Roger Ramirez on bajo sexto and bass. The Ramirez boys are also Gambler legacies themselves, as they are sons of Ruben’s original bajo sexto player and second vocalist, Pico Ramirez.

Long story short: Two words: “Si Señor!” Seriously, I can’t recommend this show enough. Ricky and the guys don’t make it to Austin very often, except to play a jamaica or a festival. I can’t remember the last time they played a solo show in this area.

Desperados is located at 110 W. Center Street, just west of I-35 in Kyle. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $12 before 9 p.m. and $15 after 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information, message Desperados on Facebook.

[5/8] Preview: Elida Reyna y Avante at Desperados in Kyle

May 6, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Elida posterFriday, May 8, Elida Reyna y Avante returns to Desperados in Kyle. Fans will not be disappointed by the Mercedes native and her band, who always put on a great show highlighted by her truly awesome stage presence and energetic, passionate performance style.

In the past few years, Reyna has dominated Tejano music, consistently taking home honors at the Tejano Music Awards (including Female Vocalist of the Year every year since 2007!), as well as the Latin Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album in 2010. Her solo success, as well as her recent duets with another super-hot performer, Jesse Turner of Siggno, have firmly solidified her Tejano superstar status.

One of the great things about Reyna is that she’s more than eye candy. Although undeniably gorgeous, she has written many of her own songs and has the chops to do any genre she chooses with her strong voice that is never shrill or grating. In fact, aside from the modern Tejano she is known for, she also recorded Mis Raizes back in 2006, an album that featured conjunto favorite Ruben De La Cruz and the legendary Gilberto Perez. On top of all that, she also did a mariachi duet with Michael Salgado and even performed with Salgado for President Barack Obama’s Latino Inauguration ceremony.

Long story short – Elida Reyna is hot, and at the top of her game. Expect an amazing show and large crowd of adoring fans.

Desperados is located at 110 W. Center Street, just west of I-35 in Kyle. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $15 all night long. 21+ are welcome. For more information, message Desperados on Facebook.
