[8/14] Preview: Conjunto Romo at OK Corral

Conjunto RomoTonight, Conjunto Romo will take the stage at OK Corral. The Kyle-based family band will be pretty much playing for a hometown crowd when they make their debut a the south side Tejano club, so the energy will be off the charts, filling the venue with a fun, friendly vibe that only friends, family, and longtime fans can bring.

Considered rising stars on the conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. The family band has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional conjunto sound and have established a strong following, including a growing fan base in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley.

Long story short: If you don’t like conjunto, stay home…or better yet, come out and see why conjunto’s hot right now. If you want synthesizers or brass, these ain’t your guys. Squeezebox. Stacy Adams. Suits. Dresses. Polkas. This classy crowd is will pack the dance floor with the intricate partner dances that are the norm at conjunto clubs in San Antonio and further south.

[7/3] Preview: Conjunto Romo and Los Badd Boyz Del Valle at Texas Club Bar and Grill

Conjunto RomoFriday July 3, the holiday weekend starts off with a conjunto shoot out at Texas Club Bar and Grill. The southeast Austin Tejano club will welcome back Kyle’s own Conjunto powerhouse Conjunto Romo for a double bill with the sharp-dressed men from Elsa, Los Badd Boyz Del Valle.

Considered rising stars on the Conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. The family band has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional Conjunto sound and have developed a strong following, including a growing fan base in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley.

The Badd Boyz have enjoyed immense popularity in the past few years with a couple of hit singles and albums, earning them a growing fan base that reaches from their home turf to Houston, where hardcore conjunto has exploded amongst a younger crowd. In 2011, the guys won the award for Best New Artist-Group at the Tejano Music Awards and scored a big hit with “Eres Clicka.” Their latest single, “Una No Es Ninguna,” was just released last month.

Long story short: SQUEEZEBOX! Suits! Polkas! Puro conjunto to the max. There won’t be a sax or a synthesizer in sight.

[4/17] Preview: Conjunto Romo and Lucky Joe at Tejano Ranch

Conjunto Romo posterFriday, Apr. 17, will be all about the squeezebox at Tejano Ranch. The north Austin Tejano club will welcome back Kyle’s own conjunto powerhouse Conjunto Romo, but will also present Mission, TX – based phenom Lucky Joe.

Considered rising stars on the conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. The family band has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional conjunto sound and have established a strong following, including a growing fan base in the Coastal Bend and Rio Grande Valley.

Speaking of the Valley, accordionist Lucky Joe will be making his Austin debut that evening. After gigging here and there for nearly 20 years with a variety of different groups, Lucky Joe earned the Best New Artist – Male trophy at 2014 Tejano Music Awards. This performance in Austin will also serve as a CD release party for Lucky Joe and his band’s latest release on Freddie Records, Muchacha Bonita, with several shows scheduled all over the Lone Star State.

Long story short: Squeezebox-squeezebox-squeezebox. Stacy Adams. Suits. Dresses. Polkas. This classy crowd is will pack the dance floor with the intricate partner dances that are the norm at conjunto clubs in San Antonio and further south. It’s also good to see some new blood at Austin’s biggest Tejano club – something I hope to see more of and write more about.

Tonight, Sept. 13, Texas Club Bar and Grill presents Conjunto Romo. The family band from Kyle, also known as “Los Little Rascals de Conjunto” will bring their hardcore conjunto to the southeast Austin Tejano hotspot on a weekend loaded Diez y Seis celebrations all over the ATX.

Considered rising stars on the conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. With two band members still in high school and one recently graduated, Conjunto Romo has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional conjunto sound and have established a strong following.

Long story short: There will be no synthesizers, no saxophones, or any of the extras that you would normally hear at a Tejano show. With no straight-up conjunto at either of the big events at Fiesta Gardens or Round Rock, hardcore conjunto fans and dancers will have an option on Saturday night.

[8/10] Preview: Serapio Herrera and Conjunto Romo at the Texas Club Bar and Grill

Saturday, Aug. 10, will be a night of Tejano and Conjunto at the Texas Club Bar and Grill. Veteran Tejano star Serapio Herrera from New Braunfels will be celebrating the release of his new CD along with Kyle’s favorite family conjunto, Conjunto Romo.

Herrera, originally from Seguin, is making a comeback after nearly 20 years of semi-retirement. With his group, Los Sonics and later with his Orquesta, Serapio enjoyed steady success from the mid-1960s to the early 1980s, recording with various labels including Freddie Records and Austin’s own Valmon Records. His latest CD, Cincuenta Viente, is available now.

Considered rising stars on the Conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional Conjunto sound and have established a strong following.

Long story short: Conjunto and Old School Tejano like this go together like the chocolate and peanut butter in Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, so it should be a good show. Plus Serapio’s longtime Austin fans will be delighted to see him back in action.

[6/29] Preview: Marky Lee y Hache III and Conjunto Romo at Texas Club Bar and Grill

Saturday, June 29, the Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes back Houston’s Marky Lee y Hache III and Kyle’s Conjunto Romo. Once again, Conjunto will be the name of the game at the southeast Austin club.

Hache III plays a brand of Tejano heavily infused with the more traditional Conjunto style, with strong lead accordion and a set list full of polkas. Frontman Marky Lee began his career with Lockhart’s Augustin Ramirez and also spent some time with The Hometown Boys, and most recently, Hache III.

Considered rising stars on the Conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo  has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional Conjunto sound and have established a strong following.

Long story short: A great night for dancing, especially for the Conjunto faithful.

Saturday night, May 25, Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes back Conjunto Romo, along with Grupo Inolvidable. Romo, the family conjunto from Kyle, is no stranger to the Austin music scene, but Corpus Christi-based Inolvidable is still unknown to fans in the Live Music Capital.

Considered rising stars on the conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. With two band members still in high school and one recently graduated, Conjunto Romo has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional conjunto sound and have established a strong following.

Grupo Inolvidable is another up and coming group in the red-hot world of conjunto. Led by Mario Newman, the band has been laying down tracks and recording their very first album, and starting to venture outside their hometown. Their sound is high-energy conjunto with some accordion fireworks and bright harmonies between the first and second voices.

Long story short: Conjunto, conjunto, conjunto! Stacy Adams, Guayaberas, polkas, good times.

Saturday, Feb. 23, Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes back Conjunto Romo. The family band from Kyle, also known as “Los Little Rascals de Conjunto” will bring their hardcore Conjunto to the southeast Austin Tejano hotspot.

Considered rising stars on the Conjunto scene, Conjunto Romo includes father Navor Romo on bass and vocals, and sons Cedrick on accordion, JJ on drums and Noe on bajo sexto. With two band members still in high school and one recently graduated, Conjunto Romo has made great strides in establishing themselves among legendary performers and fans alike. Citing the late Jimmy Garcia of Los Garcia Bros. as a major influence, the Romos stay true to the traditional Conjunto sound and have established a strong following. They recently just got back from Wisconsin, and delighted the crowd at the Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival.

Long story short: There will be no synthesizers, no saxophones, or any of the extras that you would normally hear at a Tejano show. This is straight-up Conjunto, and will satisfy the hardcore fans and dancers.
