[8/8] Preview: Cinco Doce and Bidi Bidi Banda at Holy Mountain

August 8, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Bidi Bid bandaTonight at Holy Mountain, Austin’s own Cinco Doce will share the stage with Bidi Bidi Banda. Fans should be prepared for lots of cumbias and lots and lots and LOTS of Selena.

Cinco Doce has roots in conjunto and has made its mark in recent years with a trademark sound heavily influenced by Tejano and rock, as well as other rhythmic genres like bachata, reggaeton, and hip-hop. Their great stage show, unique sound, and hip, urban-inspired image, have gained them a loyal following, particularly among younger listeners.

Bidi Bidi Banda is the top-notch Selena cover band fronted by the incomparable Stephanie Bergara. A life-long super fan, during each show Bergara transforms herself into the late Tejano superstar with several wardrobe changes, each one hand-made and painstakingly modeled after the slain singer’s iconic outfits. Backed by an incredibly talented band, it’s truly an experience and a must-see for anyone who knows all the words to “Como La Flor.”

Long story short: One of the very few times you’ll hear Tejano downtown. Cinco Doce always brings it and so does Bidi Bidi Banda. Hip-Hop artists TTBS and Lil T are also slated to perform, so it will definitely be a little something for everyone.

Holy Mountain is located at 617 E 7th St, at 7th and Red River in downtown Austin. Cover is $10 at the door. 21+ welcome. Join the Facebook event here.

May 30, 2014 By Austin Vida Staff

Flamingo May 30Tonight popular 6th Street live music venue Flamingo Cantina is hosting a great night of Latin music featuring three Austin-based faves. All the night’s performers offer music en Español with a different estyle that all can enjoy for an affordable cost. Trust us, we ought to know.

Headliner’s Cinco Doce have made a 6th Street home away from home at Flamingo Cantina over the last few years and it has become sort of a new right of passage to see them perform there. The Urban Tejano is Austin’s answer to Kumbia Kings, Kumbia All Starz, etc., Cinco Doce is emblematic of the young, bi-cultural Latino who loves mainstream urban music but is more than proud of their Tejano roots. They intertwine R&B, pop and hip-hop with traditional, often-synthed, cumbia beats.

For those looking for some South American sounds, Austin’s La Frenetika offers an array of covers and original music that fuses elements of Colombian style cumbia, vallenato, gozadera and other traditional Latin rhythms. Long story short; lots of dancing, great crowd of regulars and big sound.

The night’s openers are Austin rock en Español vetarans Kalua. Inspired by their American, Mexican, Colombian and Venezuelan backgrounds, Kalua fuses elements of ’80s and early ’90s Rock en Español (Maná, Caifanes, etc) with the vocal stylings of experienced mariachi singer for a frontman.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here for more updates and set times.

[8/24] Preview: Barrio Bash Vol. IV at Flamingo Cantina

August 22, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Saturday, Aug. 24, Austin Vida is proud to present our fourth installment of our “Barrio Bash” live music showcases series at Flamingo Cantina on 6th Street. Saturday’s showcase is a special one (aren’t they all?) as it will be the first time we will be featuring Tejano artists in the Barrio Bash series. There is no better Austin-based band leading the new urban movement in the genre than headliner, Cinco Doce.

Austin’s answer to Kumbia Kings, Kumbia All Starz, etc., Cinco Doce are emblematic of the young, bi-cultural Latino who loves mainstream urban music but is more than proud of their Tejano roots. They intertwine R&B, pop and hip-hop with traditional, often-synthed, cumbia beats. Many have branded their musical style (and their lack of cowboy hats and sparkly shirts) as “Urban Tejano.” Whatever it is, la gente are feelin’ it.

Saturday’s opener is San Marcos-based Tejano band La Distancia. The Tejano sextet has been performing its special brand of cumbia-based Tejano in Central Texas for over a decade, and has a catalog full of original music and new interpretations of covers. Their recently-released single, “No Hace Falta Tu Amor,” featuring the sultry voice of singer and bajo sexto player Laura Ann, has been well-received by fans and radio stations alike.

Our special guest band (non-Tejano) is Austin-based Latin fusion band Este Vato. The group’s music combines elements of rock, reggae, hip-hop with traditional Latin rhythms. Este Vato is performing in support of their new EP, Jalapeño Business.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. $7 cover. $5 with Facebook RSVP. Music at 10 p.m. 21+ are welcome. Visit the official Facebook event page here for set times and learn how you can win admission for two.
