[4/16] Preview: Las Cafeteras, La Frenetika at Flamingo Cantina

April 16, 2015 By Austin Vida Staff

Las cafeteras posterTonight popular 6th Street live music venue Flamingo Cantina hosts the Austin tour stop for East Los Angeles’ alt-roots band Las Cafeteras. Local support comes from the South American-inspired La Frenetika. Between the two, there is every reason to go in late tomorrow or make it an early weekend.

Las Cafeteras come to Austin on tour in support of their newly released remix and music video for their single “Mujer Soy.” According to the band, the project was a special collaboration with Los Angeles DJ crew La Junta Sound System who remixed some of their previous recordings into upbeat dance tracks. Their live set is brought to life by the eclectic instrumentation used, which include jarana’s, requinto, a donkey jawbone, a West African bass instrument called the Marimbol, cajón, and a wooden platform called the Tarima used to dance Zapateado.

Local favorites La Frenetika offer an array of covers and original music that fuses elements of Colombian style cumbia, vallenato, gozadera and other traditional Latin rhythms. Expect lots of dancing, great crowd of regulars and big sound.

Austin’s DJ Chorizo Funk (Peligrosa, Body Rock) spins before and in-between sets.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $10 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[2/20] Preview: Peligrosa w/Como Las Movies and Los Federales at Empire Control Room & Garage

February 19, 2015 By Ian Morales

Peligrosa posterFriday, Dec. 20, Austin-based Latin DJ collective Peligrosa is hosting their monthly takeover of Empire Control Room & Garage. As usual, the crew will be spinning the best in Latin electrónica on the patio all night. On the control room stage inside, two of Austin’s local Latin Alternative faves will be performing. In case you are new to Austin or have been living under a rock for the last seven years, the monthly Peligrosa showcase is one of the best parties in town.

Headlining the control room stage this Friday is Como Las Movies. Austin’s purveyors of nu-cumbia, the group fuses electronic synths, accordion and jazz elements (upright bass) with traditional cumbia. While mostly instrumental, the group will incorporate a guest vocalist on occasion. Some may even even call it cumbia futura.

Rock-reggae-prog hybrid Los Federales open the show inside. Formerly known as Ex-Machina, the group is fronted Mexican national Blas Moreno. The group describes their music as “a dynamic blend of upbeat reggae and Afro-Cuban rhythms with prog-rock and punk sensibilities.” Throw in a little psychedelic touch with bilingual lyrics and that pretty much sums up their sound.

Peligrosa crew members who will be in the house Friday include Orion, Pagame, King Louie, Manolo Black, Sonora (San Antonio), DJ Manny, El Dusty (Corpus Christi) and Chorizo Funk. Peligrosa photographer Quito will be taking photos. Minds will be blown.

Empire Control Room & Garage is located at 606 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome. $8. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[1/9] Preview: Como Las Movies, Cilantro Boombox & more at Holy Mountain

January 7, 2015 By Ian Morales

Jan 9 Holy MountainWhile the last leg of 2015’s Free Week happens this weekend, Latin music fans are not left without a proper showcase. Friday night, Jan. 9, Red River hot spot Holy Mountain is the place to be, especially if you missed our Austin Vida Free Week showcase last week at Spider House Ballroom. The lineup includes Austin-based bands Como Las Movies, Cilantro Boombox, La Vida Buena and a Rudy Rexx percussion accompanied DJ set with DJ Chorizo Funk called “Clásico.”

What is great about this particular lineup for Friday is that there is something different that makes each band special. All fuse traditional Latin rhythms with different musical genres, but all have their own unique sound.

After DJ Chorizo Funk and percussionist Rudy Rexx open the show with their Clásico set, La Vida Buena will bring their salsafied hip-hop fusion to the stage to set up the night’s headliners. Lead by member Louie “Luison” Alarcon, the group performs original tracks from their debut EP ¡Checkpoint Alpha! as well as covers of popular hip-hop and R&B tracks.

Como Las Movies are Austin’s purveyors of nu-cumbia, fusing electronic synths and jazz elements with traditional cumbia. While mostly instrumental, the group will incorporate a guest vocalist on occasion. The group is composed of musicians from of my old Austin favorites of the past including Maneja Beto, Mitote and La Guerrilla.

Cilantro Boombox are a perfect electronic marriage of Latin and Afrobeat, which translates into an epic live show. The group formed when producer/bassist Felix Pacheco and Joe Willard of saxophonist Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears fame came together in 2010. They’ve been the opening act for Los Amigos Invisibles on multiple occasions in Texas and are known for hosting a series of killer boat parties in the summer.

Don’t let the cold keep you home Friday. This group of artists is special and to see them live for no charge is a gift, so please take advantage if you haven’t seen these bands before. You will be amazed at what you discover and upset you didn’t see them sooner.

Holy Mountain is located at 617 E. 7th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. All ages welcome. No cover for 21+. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[8/15] Preview: Peligrosa and Bombón at Empire Control Room & Garage

August 15, 2014 By Ian Morales

PeligrosaTonight is the night Austin-based Latin DJ collective Peligrosa takes over the Empire Control Room & Garage patio. While that alone is news worthy to Latin electronic music fans and EDM peeps, tonight the party is getting “turnt up” Houston style with Bombón. This party is a long overdue and doors are opening an hour earlier if that tells you anything.

At first look, Bombón appears to be the doppelgänger to Peligrosa. The tropical dance party purveyors are composed of DJs Gracie Chavez, Navó, OG Bobby Trill and Panchitron. They too have their monthly Latin tropical throw down in Houston at Fox Hollow, much like Peligrosa at Empire. They have garnered their own online buzz since their inception with more focus on remixing H-Town classics, of course. Be ready to enjoy screwmbia, moombahton and more.

Special guest percussionist Chappy Luna of Los Skarnales and The Suffers fame will be joining Bombón tonight. La Comadre Mel will be in the house. ‘Quito will take your picture.

Empire Control Room & Garage is located at 606 E. 7th Street. Event will take place on the patio. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.
