Friday, June 6, Tejano Ranch welcomes Chente Barrera and rising star Lisa Mar to the stage. Hailing from Losoya, Texas, the multi-talented drummer, singer, bandleader, producer, and songwriter returns to Austin along with a fresh voice for another show full of what some consider the next generation of Tejano.
He might look young, but Barrera is a veteran, having played with some of the heavyweights of Tejano, including David Lee Garza, with whom Chente’s late father also played. An accomplished drummer and vocalist, Chente’s solo career has been remarkable, including a Grammy Award for Best Tejano Album for Sigue El Taconazo in 2007. Through his record label, Q-Vo Records, Chente has recorded and produced artists like bajo sexto master Juan P. Moreno, accordion titan David Farias, and “La Reina de Conjunto” Linda Escobar.
San Antonio native Lisa Mar is a new voice in Tejano, with influences from Linda Ronstadt, Elsa Garcia, Selena and Ana Gabriel. She has appeared at the Tejano Music Awards Fan Fair event and is looking forward to showcasing her abilities to the Tejano world.
Long story short: With a great, David Lee Garza-style Tejano sound, with plenty of covers of popular classics and new originals, Barrera manages to have a fresh sound that appeals to younger listeners and an older crowd at the same time. The audience will love Lisa Mar’s Austin debut as well.
Tejano Ranch is located at 7601 North Lamar, just south of Highway 183 in north Austin. The doors open at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $8 before 9 p.m, and $10 cover after 9 p.m. 18+ are welcome.
