A naturally bilingual spring break camp for middle school students called STEAM Camp (STEM—Science, Technology, Engineering, Math—through cultural arts) will be held starting Mar. 11 and end Mar. 15 by the Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance and Cultural Center (PRFDance). It will start at 9 a.m. and last until 4:30 p.m. at the Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance & Cultural Center located on 701 Tillery Street, Austin, 78702. There is early drop-off from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and late pickup until 5:30pm. Advance registration is required and space is limited. This is an innovative camp that uses traditional Puerto Rican dance to ignite the creative process and bridge it to electrical engineering concepts. This process comes from Dr. Ana Maria Tekina-eirú Maynard and her combination of Engineering (PhD, Carnegie Mellon), her innovation which includes nine patents, and cultural arts expertise as Artistic Director of PRFDance. Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance and Cultural Center (PRFDance) is a nonprofit, volunteer-run center and is the only cultural center in Texas and four surrounding states affiliated with the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture for their offereing of authentic cultural programming for preschool age children all the way through adults, as well as having a professional-level performing company., their mission is to promote cultural awareness and pride through performances and high quality educational programs in the folkloric performing arts and the teaching of Puerto Rican history and celebration through cultural tradition.
