Brownout takes over Frank every Thursday in September

September 5, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

Thursday nights just got waaayyyyy funkier this month at Frank. The popular purveyor of the artisan sausage, which regularly features live music to go with those fancy hot dogs, will host Austin-based two sets from Austin-based funksters Brownout live every Thursday night in September. Con El Brownout No Se Juega!

As if two sets of the funk each Thursday night was not enough, Brownout is performing with different special guest DJs and collaborators each Thursday night. Starting with a hip-hop theme tonight, local hip-hop faves DJ Chicken George (peddling jazztronica), Riders Against The Storm and Bavu Blakes join band for some special performances.

Tonight’s lone out of town guest, Will Holland, comes all the way from Colombia by way of England. Better known by his DJ moniker Quantic, Holland spins some of the best electronic cumbias, salsa, bossa nova, soul, funk and jazz. Many of you will remember his track “Mi Swing Es Tropical” with Nickodemus from the Apple commercial.

Frank is located at 407 Colorado St. Doors open at 9 p.m. with the DJs and music starts at 10:30 p.m. $10 cover. All ages are welcome. Check back with Austin Vida each week for previews of each night’s showcase or visit the event page on Facebook here for details.

[5/25] Preview: Brownout and El Tule at Flamingo Cantina

May 23, 2013 By Austin Vida Staff

What’s better than a Saturday night full of live funk and Latin music? There answer is a night of funk and Latin music that benefits the Austin Music Foundation. Austin-based bands Brownout and El Tule will bring the party to Flamingo Cantina this Saturday,  May 25.

Brownout is the funky little brother or permanent side project of Grupo Fantasma. Their sound is a throwback to the simpler times when funk was king in the ’70s. Their latest album Oozy (NatoGeo Records) is worth picking up for those who love hardcore Latin funk. By the end of the night, you’ll be singing “con El Brownout no se juega.” Brownout perform early at 10 p.m.

Following Brownout is Latin fusion band, El Tule. Their music blends elements of salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggae set to Spanish lyrics. What catches most by surprise is that the Latin band you are hearing either live or recorded is fronted by musician John Dell, the gringo brother from another mother. Barrio pass in hand, El Tule is Latin music staple on Austin and always provide a good time. Be ready to stay late and party all night as El Tule take the stage at 12:30 p.m.

Special guest DJ Jeff Strange will be spinning when doors open at 9 p.m and throughout the night. Flamingo Cantina is located 515 East 6th Street. 21+ welcome. $10 cover. Visit the Facebook event post here.
