[2/20] Preview: Bombasta + Afrofreque at The Sahara Lounge

February 19, 2015 By Ian Morales

Bombasta Feb 20Friday, Feb. 20, popular East Austin venue The Sahara Lounge is playing host to a great night of live music that is being billed as an “Eastside Soul Rebel Throwdown.” The showcase pairs together Bombasta, the San Antonio-based “barrio big band,” with Austin-based soul/hip-hop hybrid Afrofreque. These two will be “battling” it out with alternating sets all night leaving only one true winner…those in attendance.

Bombasta is San Antonio’s answer to modern day Latin Alternative bands like Ozomatli or B-Side Players. With Bombasta, one and two word descriptions won’t cover the entire scope of what you are going to hear when the music starts playing. Be ready for a bilingual blend of rock, reggae, hip-hop, salsa and of course cumbia backed by a full horn-section.

Afrofreque is a soul/hip-hop band composed of veteran Austin-based musicians you may recognize from countless other local bands. Fronted by MC Tiger Liu, the group’s music is focused on mixing their positive and conscious lyrics with soulful grooves you can dance to.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $7 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here for set times.

[3/2] Preview: “Invasion Latino” showcase at Flamingo Cantina

March 1, 2013 By Ian Morales

The evolution of Latin music from Texas will be on display on Saturday, Mar. 2, at Flamingo Cantina. All three bands, headliners in their own right, take the stage to show you what Texas-based music has become; a fusion of sounds inspired by both our cultural roots and American upbringing. While the event poster says it the “Invasion Latino,” it very well could be called the “New Latino Invasion.”

Opening the showcase are the newly formed Como Las Movies, which feature ex-members from popular Indie en Español band Maneja Beto. After debuting to the public during Free Week in January, the group is on the verge of being the next Latin up-and-comer in the Austin music scene. Early YouTube vids show that their music is a Latino fusion of electronic, indie and soul. Arrive early as Como Las Movies perform at 10 p.m.

Master Blaster Sound System comes to town from Corpus Christi with members here in Austin as well. The group features Peligrosa member DJ Dus, also known as “El Dusty,” and former Grupo Fantasma member Brian Ramos who also performs with Charanga Cakewalk. Their music combines elements of traditional Mexican rhythms with electronic and hip hop elements. Master Blaster perform at 11 p.m.

Closing the night is San Antonio’s Bombasta.  The Alamo City answer to Ozomatli, the “barrio big band” is a veteran with a long history of fusing sounds before it was trendy. With cumbia at their core, Bombasta also incorporates elements of hip hop, funk, reggae and salsa into their music. Be ready to party late as Bombasta perform at midnight.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. $5 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

[8/23] Preview: Suns of Orpheus CD release at Antone’s

August 22, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Thursday will be a big day for Austin-based psychedelic world music band Suns of Orpheus. Austin’s Brazilian answer to Steely Dan, the group will be honored by The City of Austin declaring August 23 as “Suns of Orpheus Day” on the same day as their CD release show at Antone’s. Not bad for a band that formed in the summer of 2011.

Fronted by Brazilian funkster and songwriter Frederico Geib, Suns of Orpheus have just completed their new album Amoris Orbita (Love Orbit). For Amoris Orbita, the group worked with Grammy winning saxophonist Phillipe Vieux (Eddie Palmieri) and Martín Perna (AntiBalas-Ocote Soul Sounds). Amoris Orbita is the follow up to their debut self-titled EP.

Supporting Suns of Orpheus on Thursday night are three of the region’s best Latin bands. Austin-based Latin fusion band La Guerrilla are always a great party band, mixing traditional sounds of South America with ska and reggae. Bombasta, San Antonio’s barrio big band, joins the party with their Ozomatli-like fusion of urban sounds and traditional Latin rhythms. Kiko Villamizar opens with his fusion of Afro-Colombiano, vallenato, ska, reggae and salsa.
