December 26, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Blue MoonTonight at the Blue Moon, Austin fans can get a good long look at Marcelo Gauna y Volante. The group is making a splash on the Conjunto scene here in Austin, and fans are in for a treat at the southside venue.

Marcelo Gauna (accordion, vocals) is a multi-faceted gem, spending decades in Conjunto, Norteño, Tejano, and even Rock n Roll groups. Coming from a talented musical family, recording as Los Hermanitos Gauna in the 1970s, Marcelo is a versatile musician who can play everything from accordion to bajo sexto to keyboards. He also played with Austin Tejano groups Yayo Castillo y Rumores and Alma Tejana (now known as the A-T Boyz). He also recorded and toured with Joe King Carrasco, a gig that took him all over the world. Most recently, he’s been gigging with Austin’s Calle Seis and Audi y Zentimiento.

Volante’s rhythm section includes three seasoned Austin veterans from various backgrounds, including Javier Cruz of Los Pinkys (bajo sexto), along with his brother on bass. Keeping time is the always awesome Oscar “Compa” Martinez, founder of online music site compadresmusic.com. The group is tight, professional, and truly a sight for sore ears.

Buena Compania is a 5-piece band made up of veteran musicians and plays a variety of different styles including Tejano, Country, Cumbias, and more. They’re not too heavy on the brass, with only alto and tenor sax being played by bandleader Gilbert Davila, and they do include a keyboard and electric guitar along with the rhythm section.

Long story short: A great way to keep the holiday going. And there’s no cover! Conjunto, Tejano, friends, fellowship, dancing, and happiness.

The Blue Moon is located at 2200 S IH 35 at the northeast corner of Oltorf and I-35, next to Best Western. There is no cover for this event and 21+ welcome. There is no cover and music should be starting around 8 p.m.

[8/29] Preview: LaLa’s Birthday – Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia + Andre Thierry & Zydeco Magic at Blue Moon

August 29, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

conjuntoTonight, Aug. 29, conjunto and zydeco collide at the Blue Moon. Austin’s own Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia and San Francisco Bay area phenomenon Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic will come together to celebrate LaLa Garza’s birthday at the south Austin nightclub.

Susan Torres y Conjunto Clemencia features personnel from Conjunto Los Pinkys, whose Sunday tardeadas at the White Horse have helped Conjunto find a new group of fans: Clemencia Zapata (drums and vocals), Bradley Jaye Williams (bajo quinto, accordion and vocals), and Javier Cruz (bass). The ever-ebullient Susan Torres tears it up on squeezebox and vocals. Aside from being top-notch musicians, the group has a lot of fun on stage and clearly LOVES Conjunto, and loves spreading its gospel to music lovers of all backgrounds. They regularly perform at Little Mexico on Wednesday nights.

Also taking the stage will be Andre Thierry and Zydeco Magic, with their irresistible spin on the already infectious accordion-driven tradition from Louisiana. Thierry, a Bay-area native and son of Louisiana transplants, grew up around Zydeco musicians who traveled to the area to perform for fellow expatriates from the deep South who yearned for a taste of home. Entranced by the legendary accordionist Clifton Chenier, young Andre grew into a virtuoso, teaching himself to play a variety of different button and piano-style accordions and ultimately forming his own band. The group was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Regional Roots Music Album in 2012 for their Nothin’ But the Best album.

Long story short: A Squeezebox Blowout indeed! Conjunto and Zydeco are known for getting people on the dance floor. Irresistible accordion melodies with strong rhythms are hard to beat on a Friday night. And there’s no cover charge!

The event is also celebrating a veteran accordionist herself. LaLa Garza was a member of the family conjunto Los Hermanos Garza in the 1960s and was recently honored by the Austin History Center as part of their program celebrating the contributions of Latinas to the Austin music scene.

The Blue Moon is located at 2200 S IH 35 at the northeast corner of Oltorf and I-35, next to Best Western. There is no cover for this event and 21+ welcome. Music is scheduled from 6-11:30 p.m. View the Facebook event page here.

[7/2] Preview: Hillside After Party and Joe Bravo’s Birthday Party at Blue Moon Bar and Grill

July 2, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

Tonight after the first installment of the Hillside Summer Concert Series, Austin’s Tejano community will gather at the Blue Moon Bar and Grill to celebrate one of their own: the legendary Joe Bravo. An all-star lineup is scheduled to be on-hand to party with the golden-voiced crooner at the south Austin night spot.

Since beginning his career with the Sunglows in the 1960s, Joe Bravo has been a fan favorite and frequent collaborator with fellow Tejano music legends. Bravo has long been known for his smooth voice that fits perfectly with the big brass orquesta sound. Among his many hits is the chicano classic slow jam “Que Casualidad,” a staple for weddings, quinceañeras, and other family gatherings throughout Texas.

Aside from Bravo, other artists scheduled to perform include members of Houston’s brass powerhouse Grupo Avizo, Calle Seis, Hugo Guerrero, Art Tijerina of Grupo Vida, JR Gomez, Jonny Martinez, Trampia Guzman, Devin Banda, and Raphael Rodriguez of Los A-T Boyz. There will probably be a few surprise guests as well.

Long story short: A great night to celebrate another year of an Austin tradition and also honor a Tejano music legend. Well worth the paltry $3 cover.
