Los Rakas are a Panamanian rap duo by way of Oakland, California. No stranger to Austin, the group was a featured performer on this year’s Pachanga Latino Music Festival and was here in March for South by Southwest. The Latin Alternative Music Conference “Discovery” award winners will soon be back on the road for a touring with the incredible Ozomatli and later with Mr. Vegas in support of their upcoming double album titled Soy Raka Presents: ‘El Negrito Dun Dun’ & ‘Ricardo’.

During Pachanga Fest our friends at Blastro2 worked with our editor-in-chief, Ian Morales, on some great video coverage and on camera interviews. Morales caught up with Los Rakas at Fiesta Gardens for a brief chat about life as underground stars, their infamous Raka Love EP and their love for their home city. Watch the video interview below.

This spring San Jose, California-based duo Raul y Mexia – sons of Hernan Hernandez of the legendary Los Tigres del Norte – celebrated the release of their debut album Arriba Y Lejos through Nacional Records. The unique fusion of sounds on the album come from Grammy-nominated producer Antonio “Toy” Hernandez, better known as Toy Selectah, who steered the mashed-up pop, rap, Mexican- Latin dance sounds and produced the majority of songs in this 10-track album.

Raul y Mexia made their first Austin appearance at this year’s Pachanga Latino Music Festival earlier this month. Austin Vida’s editor-in-chief teamed up with our friends at Blastro2 for a video interview with the duo. Learn about how they feel being the son of Mexican legend, becoming their own music group and joining the Nacional Records family.

I caught up with Ulises Lozano, keyboard player and accordionist of Mexican band Kinky at Stubb’s. The band is currently on a U.S. tour in support of their recent release, Sueño de la Máquina, produced by legendary Dust Brother, John King.

Growing up in Monterrey, Kinky’s hometown, it was easy to follow the band’s overwhelming success. In the past decade, Kinky’s Spanglish mix of rock, dance and techno has made its way into movie soundtracks, TV commercials, FIFA and multiple music festivals, like Coachella and South by Southwest. The band is currently nominated for two Latin Grammys, including Best Alternative Album for Sueño de la Máquina and Best Alternative Song for “Negro Día.”

Ulises talks about touring, upcoming plans and collaborations, Mexican style and what it’s like working with producer John King. Feel free to watch the interview below.
