Texas Performing Arts welcomes Latin Grammy Award-winning singer Mariza to Bass Concert Hall on Nov. 4. Promo photo by Isabel Pinto.

Monday, Nov. 4, Texas Performing Arts welcomes Latin Grammy Award-winning singer Mariza to Bass Concert Hall. Mariza is recognized the world over as the queen of fado – the rich and emotionally textured musical tradition from Portugal. She will be performing live with her quartet, composed of Portuguese guitarist Jose Manuel Neto, guitarist Pedro Joia, Vicky Marques on drums and her bassist, Yami. The concert is presented in partnership with Austin PBS affiliate, KLRU.

Born in Lourenço Marques – present-day Maputo – the capital of the former Portuguese colony of Mozambique, Mariza released her first album Fado em Mim (Fado in Me) in 2001. She is credited as being the first fado singer to guest on Late Night with David Letterman and has performed headlining concerts at both London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House.

Mariza is currently working on a new CD, scheduled for release in the United States in 2014, which will include her European radio hits, concert favorites, some of her duets that have never appeared on her own CDs — such as her collaboration with Sting for the Olympic Games in Greece, with Afro-Spanish singer Buika, and with Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés — and two new songs.

Bass Concert Hall is located at 2350 East Campus Dr. A map of the campus is available here. Tickets ($38 – $48 / Limited $10 student tickets / discounted tickets available for UT faculty & staff, seniors and Military) are on sale now at authorized ticket outlets, which include the Bass Concert Hall Ticket Office and all Texas Box Office outlets, online at TexasPerformingArts.org, or by calling (512) 477-6060 or (800) 982-BEVO.
