[9/19] Preview: Little Joe y La Familia with Frank Gomez at Baby Acapulco

September 19, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Baby A'sOn Friday September 19, Baby Acapulco welcomes back the legendary Little Joe y La Familia. The Temple Tejano icon is sure to put on a great show for longtime fans and music lovers alike, along with Austin favorite Frank Gomez.

The “King of the Brown Sound” is a fitting nickname for Little Joe Hernandez. Coming from humble beginnings in the cotton fields of Temple, Texas, Little Joe has seen and done it all. The music he has played over his storied career has blended together everything from mariachi, orquesta, conjunto, country, doo-wop, Sinatra-style standards, jazz, rock, salsa, and whatever else sounds and feels right, creating a sound that has resonated with Chicanos for over 50 years. Members of his bands (the Latinaires and La Familia) have been the best of the best and some, like Tony “Ham” Guerrero of Tortilla Factory, have gone on to create legacies and sounds of their very own.

The music of veteran guitar slinger Frank Gomez kind of defies categorization. Like Carlos Santana, his style is a melange of blues, R&B, jazz, with a few Tejano bits here and there, steeped in funky soul. His albums, Under the Influence and Soul Resurrection are fine showcases of his versatility and musical passion.

Long story short: A master at work, playing some of the best Tejano music ever made, alongside a soulful guitar master. A must-see for music lovers.

Baby Acapulco is located at 5610 N Interstate 35, just south of 290, on the southbound service road. The music starts at 7 p.m., there is no cover charge, and all ages are welcome. For more information, contact Baby Acapulco Restaurant at 512-302-1366.

[5/24] Preview: Braulio y Fuzzion at Baby Acapulco

May 23, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

On Friday, May 24, Baby Acapulco welcomes back one of Austin’s up and coming Tejano groups, Braulio y Fuzzion. Quickly becoming an Austin fan favorite, the 8-piece band blends together young talent with seasoned veterans to create a sound that remains true to its Tejano roots with strong trumpet and keyboards, while drawing on influences from other genres as well.

After parting ways with another Austin Tejano group, Son de Rey, lead vocalist/songwriter Braulio Rodriguez, trumpet player/backing vocalist Marc Sustaita, and guitarist/backing vocalist Dan Corona formed Braulio y Fuzzion in late 2010. The group has released a couple of singles, “Que Sera De Mi” and “Como Le Hago,” and are planning to release their debut album, “La Fuerza Del Destino,” in the very near future.

Long story short: The band features not only a drummer, but a percussionist AND an auxiliary percussionist, which only means one thing: rhythm, rhythm, and more rhythm, so don’t forget your dancing shoes!

Baby Acapulco is located at 5610 North I-35, on the east side of I-35 on the southbound service road, across from Capital Plaza. The show starts at 7 p.m., there is no cover charge, and all ages are welcome. View the Facebook event here.
