[6/19] Preview: Gary Hobbs at Desperados in Kyle

June 19, 2015 By Piper LeMoine

Gary HobbsTonight Tejano superstar Gary Hobbs returns to Desperados in Kyle. The new club has continued to grow and book the biggest names in Tejano music since opening early this year. Famous for his smooth voice and movie star good looks, the charismatic hitmaker from Eagle Pass is an Austin favorite and frequent performer at Tejano music festivals here in the Live Music Capital of the World.

After beginning his career nearly 30 years ago, Hobbs has worked hard to remain successful and popular in a difficult industry that has seen its ups and downs. In 2001 he began his own independent record label, AMMX Records, which in addition to Hobbs himself, has recorded other top Tejano acts like The Hometown Boys, Ram Herrera, Grupo Stampede and Grupo Fama. The label has also expanded to include Norteño, Pop en Español, cumbias, and Christian music. While he has had many hits during his career, one of his most popular songs is “Las Miradas.”

Long story short: Gary always brings a crowd with his showmanship and solid, synthesizer-flavored Tejano.

Deperados is located at 110 W. Center Street, just west of I-35 in Kyle. The doors open at 8 p.m.The cover charge is $10 before 9 p.m. and $12 after 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. For more information, message Desperados on Facebook.

[4/10] Preview: La Frenetika + Morena Soul at The Sahara Lounge

April 9, 2015 By Ian Morales

Frenetika Apr 10Friday, Apr. 10, popular East Austin venue The Sahara Lounge will be the best place in town to hear live South American-inspired music provided by Austin-based bands La Frenetika and Morena Soul. While each band’s musical stylings have roots in different countries, both compliment each other well enough to keep attendees dancing and happy all night.

La Frenetika offers an array of covers and original music that fuses elements of Colombian style cumbia, vallenato, gozadera and other traditional Latin rhythms. Expect lots of dancing, great crowd of regulars and big sound.

Brazilian fusionists Morena Soul are the quintessential world music party starters. The group’s name is probably familiar as they are a regular at Central Market and perform at seemingly every Brazilian holiday event in town. Formed in 2010, the band was founded by singer Sarah Altoé, guitarist/songwriter Frank Almendra, and percussionist Mike Longoria to bring their own twist to traditional Brazilian rhythms.

The Sahara Lounge is located at 1413 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $7 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

Austin punkeros Sober Daze release new music video and announce unofficial SXSW performances

February 26, 2015 By Ian Morales

Earlier today Austin-based punkeros Sober Daze released their new skate/music video for “Live To Shred.” The single is their first from their forthcoming 7” split with San Antonio’s Knockin’ Chucks, scheduled for an April release from the group’s own Dazed Records. The 7″ will be made available in both vinyl and digital download formats.

Sober Daze was formed in Puerto Rico in 2002 by friends Peter Figueroa, Alex “Korn” Rivera, and Chris “Fatty” Bourcy. Shortly after they moved to Austin in 2003, they became notorious for their punk rock house parties with half pipe skateboard ramps and a tree house bar in their back yard at one point. The group currently performs as a four piece thanks to their addition of guitarist Alex “Rager” Loughborough in 2013.

Those in Austin can see Sober Daze live at the Punk Vs. Rockabilly 5 showcase on Mar. 16 at Flamingo Cantina and at the Eastside Throwdown Day Party on Mar. 20 at The Sahara Lounge.

Watch “Live To Shred” from Sober Daze below. Listen to more music from Sober Daze on Bandcamp.

January 31, 2015 By Austin Vida Staff

Cumbiamba Jan 31Once again tonight the place to be for cumbia lovers in Austin is 6th street live music venue Flamingo Cantina. Three of Austin’s best Latin bands are coming together for night dedicated to celebrating the popular Colombian-based genre with a live music showcase aptly titled “Cumbiamba.” Long story short, cumbia and more cumbia all night long.

Austin’s La Frenetika offers an array of covers and original music that fuses elements of Colombian style cumbia, vallenato, gozadera and other traditional Latin rhythms. Expect lots of dancing, great crowd of regulars and big sound.

El Tule is a longtime staple in the Latin music community in Austin. Their lyrics are about history, art and culture often focus on legends and tales of the mystical. Their music blends elements of salsa, merengue, cumbia and reggae set to Spanish lyrics.

Huerta Culture takes its name from Huerta Street in South Austin where for years a core group of friends got together to jam and lay down rhythms, sometimes hosting after parties for local and traveling musicians. Their music blends elements of reggae, ska, traditional Latin rhythms such as cumbia and combines them with socially conscious lyrics.

Flamingo Cantina is located at 515 E. 6th Street. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ welcome. $7 cover. Visit the Facebook event page here.

dia

Today the Dia De Los Muertos Festival will take place at Oswaldo A. B. Cantu Pan American Recreation Center. After an extraordinarily successful first year, the all-day event benefiting Easter Seals of Central Texas, is back for another round of family-friendly cultural activities and entertainment at the popular eastside community center best known for its Hillside Summer Concert series.

The musical lineup includes a wide variety of latino artists from various backgrounds and traditions on two different stages. Fans can look forward to mariachi, ballet folklorico, cumbias, Tejano (courtesy of Grammy Award winners A.B. Quintanilla & the Kumbia Kingz All-Starz) and more to celebrate the traditional Dia De Los Muertos holiday and raise funds and awareness for individuals with disabilities and special needs.

The schedule is subject to change, but here’s the lineup:

A.B. Quintanilla & The Kumbia Kings All Starz – 8:30-9:45 p.m.

There will also be events for the kids (piñata parties!) and a Dia De Los Muertos procession at 4 p.m.

Long story short: A great event filled with family fun, pageantry, culture, tradition, and of course, music. Lots of cumbia this year not only from ABQ and crew, but also from DFW’s own Quimikoz Del Son (a group to watch, in my opinion).

The A.B. Cantu Pan-American Recreation Center is located at 2100 E. 3rd Street, at 3rd and Robert Martinez Jr. Streets in East Austin. Tickets are $20 at the gate, and children under 12 are free with a paid adult. All ages are welcome. VIP passes are $55 for those 21+.
