Augustin Ramirez, Street People and more at Frijolito’s Birthday at Texas Club Bar & Grill

September 6, 2014 By Piper LeMoine

Texas ClubTonight, the Texas Club Bar and Grill will host a birthday celebration for KTXZ 1560 AM radio DJ Richard “El Frijolito” Martinez. Those scheduled to perform at the southeast Austin hotspot include Austin-area Tejano royalty Augustin Ramirez, Elvira Sanchez, and the newly re-formed Street People, and many more.

Since beginning his career in the 1960s, Ramirez has been prolific, recording scores of solo albums and collaborating with other legendary performers. Known to most as “El Guti,” Augustin’s classic sound features intricate guitar melodies supplied by the man himself, accentuated by big strong horns, and on occasion, accordion. Some of his greatest hits include “El Barco Chiquito,” “La Postera,” “El Parrandero,” “Tres Ramitas,” “Sangre de Indio,” and many more. Sanchez will also take the stage, lending her sultry vocals to a number of classic tracks.

Street People, led by Austin Tejano legend Leonard Davila, was one of the Live Music Capital’s most popular groups in early 1980s. Davila, a veteran vocalist and former member of Ruben Ramos and the Mexican Revolution, resurrected the group earlier this year after a nearly 30 year hiatus. Fans have welcomed the group and their old school horn-driven sound with open arms and many are looking forward to their new album, due out later this year.

Long story short: An evening of classic Tejano celebrating one of Austin’s great voices. Frijolito’s show airs every Sunday afternoon from noon to 5 p.m. on KTXZ 1560 AM.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The show starts at 9 p.m., cover is $10 all night, and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621 or view the Facebook event page here.

[7/6] Preview: Augustin Ramirez and Freddie Martinez at Texas Club Bar and Grill

July 4, 2013 By Piper LeMoine

Saturday July 6, Texas Club Bar and Grill welcomes two legends to the stage. Lockhart’s own Augustin Ramirez will be joined onstage by Corpus Christi native and longtime friend and fellow Tejano superstar Freddie Martinez for what should be an unforgettable evening of classic Tejano at the south Austin Club.

His most recent album, Volume 7, was released earlier this year.

Freddie Martinez is one of the most influential men in Tejano music history, seeing the business both as a performer and as a record company executive. The former trumpet player and bandleader was one of the most popular orquesta performers of the 1960s and 70s, with his signature sound characterized by a dominant trumpet and unique vocal style. Among his catalog of hits are “Te Traigo Estas Flores,” “Botoncito De Cariño,” “Mi Arbol y Yo,” and many more. His company, Freddie Records, has recorded many of the top artists in Conjunto and Tejano music, from Tony De La Rosa to Ramon Ayala to Siggno and Elida Reyna.

Recently, Freddie and El Guti joined “Los Leyendas,” a supergroup with longtime friends and orquesta legends Carlos Guzman, Sunny Ozuna, Joe Bravo, and the late Carlos Miranda. The album from that project, The Dream Team, is available online and in record stores.

Long story short: Tejano music fans, especially those who love brass and orquesta, should GO. A show like this will likely never happen again. It’s well worth the cover charge, but I recommend you get there early. In fact, there will be an autograph and photo session from 5:30 to 7 p.m. for the hardcore fans.

The Texas Club Bar and Grill is located on Burleson Road just south of Ben White Boulevard in southeast Austin. The cover is $15 before 9 p.m. and $20 after 9 p.m., and 21+ are welcome. For more information call (512) 541-7621.
