[7/6] Preview: Zechs Marquise, ASIWYFA at Red 7

If you’re a fan of loud, fearless experimental rock music, Los Angeles record label Sargent House has you covered from A to Z. In this case, it’s Northern Irish math-rockers And So I Watch You From Afar and El Paso prog-fusion quintet Zechs Marquise. They’re two of the label’s best live bands, and they’ll be making heads nod and ears ring Friday at Red 7.

This co-headlining tour sees And So I Watch You, or ASIWYFA, returning to Austin after playing to a packed Sixth Street club audience during South by Southwest back in March. The trio from Belfast plays a fast and heavy brand of instrumental post-rock that’ll make you pump your fist. But the band’s secret weapon is their reverence for rhythm, as the bass lines and percussion provide just enough subtle groove to balance out the crunchy and jagged guitars. Expect epic moments to ensue.

El Paso heroes Zechs Marquise are no strangers to Austin. This is the group’s fifth trip to the Live Music Capital in the past 12 months, including huge opening slots for a disbanding Rx Bandits and a reunited At The Drive-In. If you haven’t caught them yet, you have no excuse. The instrumental quintet plays a blistering, fiery blend of instrumental psych-rock and hip-hop-infused prog-rock that leaves Zechs virgins wanting more.

Cosmic noise-rock duo Zorch will open the show. The Austin band is opening the tour’s four Texas dates, after not having played live in a year.

Tickets are $12 and the show starts at 9 p.m. Red 7 is located at 611 E. 7th St. Get a preview of Zechs below. We filmed this video last year at Emo’s.

[6/30] Preview: Austin Vida presents Bombasta, 2Rock & Ex Machina at Frontier Bar

June 27, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Austin Vida is doing it big this summer with a monthly residency at Frontier Bar, the newest Eastside hot spot. We are presenting three summer showcases at Frontier Bar featuring the “barrio big band” from San Antonio, Bombasta. The first one happens this Saturday, June 30.

Co-headlining Saturday’s showcase will be Austin indie-psych band Ex Machina. Their music blends elements of psychedelic rock, reggae, progressive and indie. With their recent addition of a keyboard player, their live sound if much fuller than their early recordings we first heard.  Fronted by the often masked Blas Moreno, the group is a name Austin music fans will be familiar with soon. Ex Machina perform at 11 p.m.

No stranger to Austin, our headliner Bombasta is San Antonio’s answer to bands like Ozomatli, Locos Por Juana or El Gran Silencio. Their music is a fusion of hip hop, reggae, funk and traditional Latin rhythms. Their socially conscious lyrics represent their hometown vibe that can be appreciated by all. The best part is you can dance to all of it and they put on one of the best live shows we’ve experienced. Bombasta perform at midnight.

Austin-based rock en Español band 2Rock opens the showcase. Frontier Bar is located at 2421 Webberville Rd. Doors open at 9 p.m. 21+ are welcome. $5 cover. Visit the event page on Facebook here. “Like” our event page on Do512 here for your chance to win a pair of free tickets. For those in attendance, hang out as a $20 bar tab will be raffled off. The person whose name is called must be present to win.

Watch: Xenia Rubinos’ “Hair Receding” Music Video

June 27, 2012 By Austin Vida Staff

Xenia Rubinos brings a Latin twist to indie noise rock with Caribbean rhythms and hints of punk rock. Her powerful voice plays a dual role: creating beats from scratch and overshadowing the mix of sounds in her music with her soulful vocals. With her creative lyrics that jump from subject to subject, the Brooklyn-based musician even manages to bring her abuela into her imaginative world.

Rubinos’ latest video for “Hair Receding” off her debut album Magic Trix is just as eclectic and experimental as her music. With the permission of her grandmother Carmen to strap nine cameras to her body, the video gives a complete insight into her daily life. Despite the stares from others around, she is fastened with two feet cameras, two chest (one forward, one down), two back (left/right), two arm cameras and one on Carmen’s face. From the moment she starts getting ready for her day, not a single moment is lost as she walks to the supermarket, gets her hair done, runs errands and finally returns to her apartment to peacefully fall asleep.
